I have knocked over a few donkeys of late with my compound but this is by far my most memorable!
A bowhunting mate and i arranged for a mid morning hunt to try and locate a mob of pigs that have been fequenting the last remaining water hole on the property. Mat was sprting a borrowed black widow long bow and i had decided to leave the compound at home and take my 70lb ravin vanguish out. After searching around the water hole with no pigs to be found we set off to a ridge about 2k away that holds a good number of feral donkeys. we could here a mob off in the distance but no matter how hard we looked we couldn't locate them on the thick ridge.
we set off along the ridge that after a few k turned into a hill. we again heard a mob EEEH OOOORing away down to our left. we got in to where we thought they were and waited for them to confirm their presence. the sound was heard again and it was close!
At this point I could under stand how hunting deer in the roar gets guys hearts pumping.
they mob of 8 was heading towards us in hot pursuit of jeny on heat. Mat took up a good ambush position and let the jenny and 2 smaller jacks pass and took out the best donkey in the mob with a top double lung shot. we watched him as he slowly made his way accross the ridge following the rest of the mob. We conductyed a quick search for the arrow that we assumed passed through as neither of us could see it in the donkey as it ran off but it couldn't be found. We then followed up the fatally wounded donkey. As we crested the ridge another mob was spotted and Mat was left to find his donkey while i went to try and even the score.
the stalk was long and the dry leaves and sticks on the ground made it extremely hard to keep the sound to a minimal.
at 40m the game was up and they trotted off, the bamboo limbs of the ravin bent string came to the corner of my mouth and in an instant my red and white 5 inch feathers where right where i aimed in the donkey!
the donkey made it 80m where he piled up.
Man what a rush to see my arrow and donkey colide on the trot!
purly intsintive shot that totally came together.
very happy with the ravin, Dave does great work!
