That there is a nice fish.

Congrats to you and your dad.

what time of day, by the photo's there is plenty of light so my guess would be an early morning start on a rising tide?

Hutcho, about 2 in the day, was pretty much on the dead bottom of the tide, run had nearly stopped.

We started fishing about 8 in the morning but took us about 5 hrs to get enough potties, bloody wind!!

Awesome flattie, See quite a few like it when diving for oysters at _ _ _ _ _.
Not often they're landed at that size.

Well done to the old boy ;)

Well done on letting the big one go. Smaller ones are a bit better eating, but either way you can't beat a feed of flathead :D

im sure most of you may know, but if not,the flatheads change from males to females,so large ones like that are females and are best released, i believe there is a size limit in qld ,just for that reason,it may also be true for barramundi..

there s a name for them,im sure someone will know the name for this....

hailes, they reckon its good flathead fishing off the coast up here, yet to try,but sure to be in the new future..

good fishing

I believe the term is protandrous hermaphrodite.

But I also believe that Flathead are not protandrous hermaphrodite's, as studies have shown that they retain there sexual orientation throughout their life cycle, with males and females being identified across their entire size range and in every sub-species. Females have a much higher growth rate so it is more likely that a large fish would be a female. Also as the size of a mature female increases her ability to produce eggs increases expediential, say a 2kg female produces 0.5 million eggs when she reaches 4kg she may produce 5 million eggs. It is also suggested that older, larger fish produce eggs with a much higher survival rate.
So that is why it is important to return large specimens. :)

Bang on Clemo. I have head a few disagrements over the years with some older fishos about it, Ive done a bit of research and found that this be the case.

There is no scientific study that can conclude that the fish (Flathead) change sex, unlike some other fishes.

Either way that is a crackin flathead. My best was 102cm and 7kegs. But that one looks well into the 8's.

Congrats!!
