Hi everyone

Well I have been lurking around this and other sites for some months now but the time has come for me to make my first post.

I am keen to get back into archery after a 20 year lay off and am at the point where I think some advice would be greatly appreciated. After having researched my needs and wants, researched my local clubs and done me gear homework, I am finally at a point where I would like to purchase my own set-up. As such, I would REALLY like some advice as to what folks think I should buy.

Some background info:

I will use the bow primarily for hunting small game, from rabbits through to pigs and goats, nothing larger.

I’m not a big bloke, weighing in at 65Kg (soaking wet) and around 5'8". As such I "think" I require a weight of around 55# at 27".

I am currently leaning toward one of the many compound bow complete packages, rather than buying individually. One of starter PSE packages such as the PSE NOVA or Bruin seems to fit the bill.

Does it sound like I am on the right track? Does anyone think I should be heading in another direction?

Thanks in advance folks.

Oh and I will probably make a nuisance of myself with a number of questions over the coming months, so apologies in advance as well!

Cheers

Congratulations on the decision to get back into bowhunting. Sounds like you've been doing some homework. And some searching on ebay maybe. Get into your nearest archery shop. Shoot a few bows and pick the brains of the staff there. It will be invaluable. Don't buy over the net sight unseen. Buy the best you can afford now and you'll be happy for a long time.

Welcome back:)

IMO

I have always like PSE bows, the Nova or Bruin are a good bow to start a young teenager on as a beginner bow but if your not a complete novice then I would probably look at something a bit better, make sure if you purchase a package that you get everything you you ask for, do not rely on a picture.

Are you planning to shot fingers or release aid? If you plan to shot fingers then get a bow with a longer axle to axle length, less finger pinch and is more forgiving.

Do PSE still make the Bruin or are they old stock in Australia?

You should be able to get a good package for around $600 -$900, depending on what you want to spend.

There are a lot of different bows out there so I only comment on the two you mentioned, just about every bow hunter will recommend different bows to you.

As Dave said get to a shop that specilises in archery, shoot their bows and ask questions.

Thanks very much for the reply guys.

Well I think I have narrowed my bow down to either a Martin Jaguar Magnum or a PSE Stinger NI. As a small framed bloke, just getting back into the sport, these both seem a pretty good choice....but then Im just starting out. Anyone got any better ideas?

Ebay is good but you won't get a warranty with the bow and it won't be set up "ready to shoot" so to speak. We offer the PSE stinger at a good price and set all bows up so that they are fairly well tuned to begin with. My pick would be the PSE stinger over the NOVA, Bruin and Jag

What is has over the other bows:

It is quieter to shoot
It has better adjustability than the Martin
It has a nice over-sized idler wheel for smoother draw
It has a positive draw stop
It has parallel limbs
It is faster IBO

Jase.

Hi there all sorry to hijack the thread, this will be my first post here. I am about to get into bow Hunting with a few friends and was doing a search on a couple of bows that have made my short list, one is the PSE Stinger and another is the Diamond Triumph and another the Jennings 3.3. Anyway question is what is the better bow in regards to quality. I would be looking at a 60-70lb LH bow or there abouts.

G'day. The Stinger is a nice shooting bow and new for 2008. Jennings Archery is no more. The Diamond Triumph is a nice bow, but also a bit more pricy. And welcome back "EcoMuse". I am with RazorX. The Stinger is a sweet shooting bow. Happy shopping.

Mate, thanks a million for the feed back. As it turns out I contacted RazorX (PM) and he has set me up with a Stinger set to around 55# @ 27". It is due to arrive mid next week.

You dont get much more friendly and helpful folk than those that exist on this forum!! I look forward to filling you all in on how my new bow performs!

Cheers
