well i was on msn talking to jesse (woodstocka) last night and he sujested i should have a crack at a fox at my good spot, well i decided last night that i'll get mum to drop me off at 7am and see how i go.
last night i got all of my gear ready, i dont think i got any sleep at all but i didnt feel tired when i got out of bed so that was a bonus.
i didnt think anything of the day ahead as i have done this many times only to tell mum i didnt get anything.
once the gear was in the car we headed off and within 5 minutes i wa walking up the hill to where i would have my first shot at whistling for the morning. once the camera was set up i got into position and began to whistle, after about 3 or so minutes it wasn't looking good until i saw movement to my right, it was a young fox that had popped up over a rise, i couldn't draw because he was only 10meters away, he came right in to two meters and then turned and was gone quicker then he had come.

i set myself up again under an old gum tree and started whistling, after about 10minutes and nothing i moved on.
after walking up over the ridge i stopped to have a whistle when i spotted a good size fox walking along a dam bank, i filmed it doing its thing and then set up for a whistle, this fox was old and wise and knew the sound of y whistle a little too well, he didnt come in so i tried to put in a stalk but before i could locate him he was off up the hill and out of sight.
i thought i might as well try for a fox under a big old tree thats fairly out in the open only about 50meters from where i saw the fox near the dam. the camera was ready and the whistling began, within a minute i had a good size fox coming straight at me from across the paddock, i let him come into about 8meters and let him have it, the arrow punched through its side and came out into its back leg, the fox then bit my arrow in half snarrled for a few seconds, layed down, kicked and it was all over! i put in a couple more shots just to make sure;).
i couldn't beleive it i had actually taken my first ever fox and it was with a bow! what an awesome feeling. i jumped around like i had won a million dollars and thats what it felt like after putting in so much effort and finally bringing up the goods.

after my little outburst i got through the fence and spotted another good size fox munching on something next to the blackberrys, i set up the camera and got into position, just as i was about to blow on the whistle another good fox came out and thats and my heart started pounding, i began to whistle and the second fox looked straight at me....to be continued

He came bolting up the hill towards me and then slowed to a walk and continued to my right trying to get wind of the source of food, he came up the fence line and out of view of the camera, i slipped an arrow straight down the front of its shoulders near its neck and the arrow came out near its back leg, it spun and attempted to run down hill but it only manages to run about 15meters then rolled and fliped for another 5 or so meters and that was my second fox shot only 40meters from where i got my first!!:D

i continued on leaving the camera bag and foxes behind and i would come back and get them later.
next stop was above a good patchy area of blackberrys with wide open clearings where the bunnys roam. i set myself and the camera up and the whistling began, within a minute or so a fox came pelting across the open and came trotting into about 10meters to my left, by this stage i was at full draw and was leading him, i could of taken it no probs from this distance but i wanted it to stop, it wasn't to be and it soon cought wind of me and left the scene, i kept whistling and another young fox came up from over a rise and was about 10meters to my right, i couldn't draw because it was staring straight at me, it to soon left and i was kicking myself for not shooting the first one, i kept whistling and to my suprise another young fox came in and i was again not at full draw! it came into about 3meters then left the scene to join its friends in the blackberrys, i was as happy as larry to be getting such good numbers in. i packed up and moved on.

i thought for the next spot i would perch myself off the ground on a dead tree out in the open and see if i can get anymore in, it took a few minutes but finally a nice young fox came slowly walking into the call, she wasn't sure and i could tell she could see me, i gave the whistle a few good blasts and that had her trotting in at a nice pace, she walked over to my left and....to be continued;)

she pulled up to sniff the air and i slammed a shaft through the top of her ribs, she jolted turned and looked at the arrow that was now sticking out of the ground behind where she was standing, her front leg was stiff and she slowly walked about 10meters then fell over rolled around for a few seconds and that was it, my third fox for the day!!
i carried her and my gear back to the other foxes and took some footage of me and all three of them then i began the never ending walk back to the road where i would get my brother to come and pick me up.
i could carry my bow, tripod, camelback, camera, bulky bino's and three foxes so i had to carry whatever i could, drop it off somewhere and go back and grab the other two foxes, i had to do this several times and it took me nearly an hour to walk what would usually take 20minutes or so.
once i finally reached the road i sent him a text message and he arrived in no time. i only had my video camera and no still shot camera so i had to wait untill dad got home before we went back and i took some pictures of the foxes without me because the camera doesn't have self timed photo.

so in the end it was an awesome day out, i was able to get some footage for the movie and best of all i got my first fox and now the natives can relax a little more, althouugh i did see 10-11 and whistled in 7 and got 3 so there are heaps out there but they will have to wait until next time before they have their photos on TBGA;).

pictures to come soon.

thank's for reading, dan.

Top stuff Dan congrats on the foxes, I went out last night and used the button whistle for the first time nothing for the first 2 hrs then right on dark one came in at a hundred miles an hour and stopped on the other side of the fence from me at around 15m from me but i missed him. Went out this morning and called 2 in at once but couldnt get a shot off in time. Then 5mins later called my 4th fox in but did not realize he was 3m from me on the other side of the bush until i stood up and got a big fright like he did and buggered off real fast. So no kills yet with the LB but having a ball. Thanks Adam for telling me to get a $2 whistle best money i have ever spent.

Cheers

i used a button whistle, wont be using anything else, they are worth a million bucks! and yep that was me trying out the scotch call, i have tried it a few times without success around here but i also have tried the button whistle around here and only had one young fox come in. i will have to give it a go at my good spot and see how it goes but i much prefer the button whistle as its very easy to just put it in your pocked and theres no extra weight and is very effective.

thank's ben, i will have to get back out there and thump a few more.

Good stuff mate, after you get the first of a species the others tend to follow pretty quickly, but following up with another 2 on the same day, great effort.

Great day by the sounds of it.

I'm hoping to start on foxes, rabbit/hares and whatever else warrants an arrow. A button whistle eh, Will have to grab one and see what I can bring in. Have 1,000 acres to shoot on at Esk (brisbane valley). As far as I know, there's wallaby's (not allowed to shoot them, (owner's rules) but Fox, Dingo's and rabbit/hares are open season. Unsure if there are any deer out there, but will hopefully find out soon enough.

Keep the pictures coming!
