I was able to enjoy the privilege of hunting with my son over the Australia day long weekend and we had a great time sharing some quality time together.
We spent the weekend camping on a river in the Tenterfield area with a couple of friends and hunted the local population of goats and pigs which lived in the surrounding hills.
The aim of the trip, apart from sharing good company while bowhunting, was twofold; the first objective was to get my son out hunting with his new longbow and hopefully take his first game with it. The second was to test out a new bow that Glenn Newell has designed, for the purpose of writing a review of it for the new annual bowhunting magazine soon to be released.

Unfortunately with all of the recent rain, the game had moved back up into the deep gullies and steep slopes of the ranges. It took us several hours of hard hiking to get to where the game was and this just plain wore out my 8 year old son.

We hunted hard the first day putting in a big effort, but unfortunately we didn’t end up getting any game on the ground. Locky had some close stalks, getting into 25m from a nanny and ¾ grown billy but the wind swirled giving him away.

We also put up a young boar in a gully but unfortunately when he propped at 20m he did so behind some silver leaf bushes and we couldn’t get a shot away before he disapeared into the scrub. The same day saw us set up a perfect ambush on an unsuspecting mob of nannies and kids with them approaching to 10m from us on a game trail. Once again however the ever swirling wind gave us away before Locky could get a shot off.

We took it a bit easier over the following 2 days, staying closer to the river, but although we searched hard and long, there was just no game to be found.
Although we didn’t down any game we still had a great weekend and shot a lot of arrows, giving both new bows a real workout. The new static tip recurve that Glenn Newell has developed is a very impressive, smooth shooting bow, ideally suited to hunting. Watch out for the full review of it in the new annual bowhunting magazine, which will be released sometime over the next few months.

Good story and pics Paul! Just go's to show that all hunts are not successful and you don't have to put game on the ground to enjoy what we do. cheers

If you went where I think you did mate, Locky's done a great job just to get to the top of those hills :D

Nice pic of the Goanna too! Looks like his bow is not the only thing he's shooting well.

Thanks for sharing mate. :)

Mate they have got to be some of the best tiimes you can have hey. Spending it with your sone in the great Aussie bush & passing on some real stuff instead of that crap on TV or video games. As my signature says below mate.
