With warm water and weather i have been busy with other activitys but when my new range finder came in the mail from the states. I was straight outside shooting at the target checking the readings on the different pins and playing with my new toy.
This got me all keen and after a bit of rain i thought i would check out a spot i havent hunted in awhile. Its full of leaves if there hasnt been rain its like walking on corn flakes.
After talking to the owner he asked for some bones for his dog if i get lucky. All geared up and i was off. i walked slow always stopping and having a good look. I was expecting to see deer as no one would have been in this gully for months. 20min in to the hunt and there is 4 hinds head down feeding in the ferns 60m away. With a steady se wind blowing in to my face i was confident that it wouldnt swirl and so took my time. Having a real good look that there wasnt any deer i had not seen as this has caught me out before. I continued forward only moving when all four heads were in the ferns. Every 30 seconds one would fling its head up and look around ( they are so cautious all the time). By now im 40m and have manage to get this far with out cracking a twig the leaves were soft and and there were leaches all over my legs. 35m and the twig under foot goes crack my first mistake im behind a cabbage palm with all four staring in my direction 5min later and they semi relax and go back to feeding but always checking my direction.
25m im at the end of cover out with the new finder a couple of slow breaths and i slowly raise the bow the closest deer was broadside with two facing straight on the other behind a tree. Heads down i draw the bow only to see one of them staring straight at me on full alert the deer i had my pin on froze staring straight not at me. Now or never and off goes the arrow the animal jumps and hits far back. Deer scatter with the normal bark bark. Im sitting in the ferns cursing my self for taking a shot at an alert deer.Sat for 5min picked off leachs then crept out of the area at this stage its 1:30.
5:00pm and im back with a mate not at all confident we follow the track in the leave litter she made as she ran after 20m the blood started. 10m on and the the ferns are cover in red surprised we continued down the gully then there she was. The shot hit her in the hip hitting an artery the rage broadhead opened it up she had made it 60m running straight down. I am still up set with the shot but at least it worked out and she isnt out there with an injury

As i said not happy with the shot a but at the end of the day after a bit of work recovering the meat the old beer fridge is full. She was cold when i found her though i think giving her time was a good thing. It was a good hunt and only made two mistakes always room for improvement.

great hunt mate , sometimes things will never be perfect but this time it worked.
It coulda been much worse and a deer coulda been running about with an injury.

Well done!

Well done Clint. She certainly is a big bodied doe and it would a very tough carry out. Despite the mistake, a deer on the deer on the ground so it is still an awesome effort.

Well done Clint, some good feeds to come off her i reckon. They should be in real good nick this time of the year comming into the roar in the next few months. Good to see the rage B/Head worked as well. Were they the 2 blade or the 3 blades you were using? As i have got a dozen of the 3 blade style comming for the roar this year on the Reds.

Thanks for the replys.
Grunter i use the two blade i think they are great havent seen the the three blade.I think they would be just as deadly. Good luck with the Reds!
Acthunter as you said it doesnt always work out perfect but thats what happened and i guess thats hunting. ill always do my best for a great shot but some times things go different. better to tell you guys and girls how it went rather than to make up the perfect shot.
Ant as you would know the carry out is always worth it plenty of meat my mates are already hitting me up for the chilli jerky.
