Matt and i set are self a goal, it was to at least encounter some deer while we were out hunting and possibly get a good shot in, after a few minutes of walking along some good trails, showed some good signs of the fallow in my area repopulating, after about 5 minutes we had several hares run out of are feet and a good shot taken from about thirty five metres by matt pretty much splitting the middle of his two ears….so close,.. But we travelled on to be busted buy several fallow, trying to cut them off we encounted three foxes (to youngens and one older mangy one) feeding on some blackberries, we quickly got set up and whipped out the Tenterfield, but they just ignored it??, puzzled why they didn’t come in to the call, taking several steps along the trail from where we where just whistling a good sized hare ran straight at us and stopped about fifteen metres from where we were, waiting for it to just come out from behind some fallen over gum trees, it got a whiff of something it didn’t like ( it wasn’t us we guessed the foxes) because after it smelt the air it sprinted straight past us before we could even draw.. after the short little hunt we headed back to set up camp on the outer regions of the forest, now knowing what to expect the next morning had us up before sun light packing and gearing up for what we thought was going to be a good successful hunt.. we headed out to spot several roo’s feeding along the edge of the forest, when we reach the edge we chucked the shoes off and went into stalking mode, several hares could be herd rustling about in the thick as well as some big roo’s, we found a good little trail that we headed up on which looked like it could have some nice deer bedded along the sides,.. yep I was right :D just as we merged over a little hill I spotted something that didn’t look natural but I thought nah its probably just the sun catching a log and if it was a deer it would have herd me trip over lol, well as we got to about seven metres the log decided to jump up and look and run away very very quickly, after me cursing and swearing to matt that I saw that about 30 metres ago and thought it was a log had us off again, as we reached are preferred hare hunting spot which holds several rabbits, also had us watching a mother fallow and her fawn feeding in the grass after they slowly made there way away (about 50 metres), had us onto another hare, matt spotted it and so I guess it was his shot, it was about 30 metres away and coming closer then it did a sharp turn in to some thick gorse bush, matt thinking it was all over, I said to him it would probably come out onto the trail we were on, after about a minute it appeared feeding on some greenery matt checked the distance and sent an arrow his way just going high, after several stuff ups we sat down and had some lunch and a it to drink.. we then headed off again to find a two deer, one fallow and the other one I was not sure about, it had a longer head and was bigger and was darker brown with no spots and had was just growing his new antlers, but the fallow it was with and all the other fallow we saw had very visible spots, my guess was all the big old males loose there spots? Or it was a red deer?, after being busted at 20 metres had us angry as the shot could have easily been taken if there vital where showing.. We walked on feeling a bit down after so many unsuccessful attempts, to find a small mob of deer (6) feeding in a clearing in the middle of the forest after taking a few photos, then we thaught we would put a stalk on, after about 5 steps we would have been about 35 metres away wen a younger fallow saw some movement (us), :o It started coming towards us not knowing what we were he kept coming closer till he stopped and started barking:o at us:confused:, me and matt amazed/ laughing as a little deer was barking at us and we have never had this happen to us before , just to make it funnier the barking scared a hare right at us it ran full pelt and stopped about a metre in front of us, matt not being able to help giggled the hare looked straight at me and matt and ran so fast he is now a bold ,
Lol if you read the whole story then good on you I nearly fell asleep writing it..:)
If anyone can help identify the big no spotted longer headed deer with a darker brown coat from my discription it would be greatly appreciated,
After such a long hunt we still felt pretty pleased that the deer are still out there for next time
