he guys i received my custom made bow made by dave keable jsut before xmas and havent really put it down (cept to drive up the the N.T now home for at least 12 months). i am quite proficient to 20m with 2117s but as soon as i go back past that i spray em round like u wouldnt believe. i focus on the small spot that i want to hit drawback pause then release. have i got it right??? with both compounds in at the doctors at the moment i really want to go hard with the curv and will probably do most of my hunting with it this year.
think it may just be the arows are to heavy but the bow is very quick.
thinking about getting some easton herritage arrows or GT traditional to help it fly flatter to at least 30m.
maybe i am just to used to shooting compounds that shoot dead flat to 25m........
or maybe i am just trying and practising to hard.
any pointers guys???
cheers cooke

Cooke,

Have you bare shaft paper tuned the alloys? That would be the first thing I would do.

I am shooting the GT traditionals at the moment and to get the weight to 10 grains per pound (which seems to be the standard for trad's) I have some 50 and 100 grain inserts, and will use either fly screen tubing or irrigation tubing (for the drip systems) to get the weight up.

Cheers,

Peter

Whats your bow weight at your draw length and how long are your 2117's.

How heavy are your points/ broadheads.

I would be leaning more to alloy arrows personally, a little extra weight in the arrows will be more helpful at trad bow ranges, if hunting is your main interest.

The extra speed of a light carbon will not be a lot of help at 30 metres and under and will cost you penetration performance on game.

If speed is important, a compound will do that better than a trad bow.

Personal satisfaction and challenge is what the recurve will give you.

With out knowing your arrow and bow specs its hard to say, but I suspect from one of Dave Keables bows that a 2117 may be a tad underspined for it.

I shot 2117 from my old bear take downs at 65# 28" ok, but have a modern high performance 65#recurve now, that demands 2219's to fly right.

Experiment and play until you get it right is half the fun.

Just a thought, even if your arrow/bow match isnt perfect, under or overspined they should still group.

Maybe left, maybe right, high or low, but they should
still group.

Big groups are often a wandering bow arm/ poor form. If you have access to a video camera it may be worth videoing your self shooting and checking out your own form/ follow through after the shot.

Good advice from Woody
Why the focus on long shots and more speed Cooke , if 20 yards is your maximum accurate range hunt inside your limits . Aiming will be easier with lighter arrows but they will let you down with penatration . For sure practice long and hard at longer ranges it can only help but Trad bows are not ideal for longer range sniping unless you are an archer of uncommon ability . You will find that more arrow mass is the go out hunting , in fact generally with Traditional bows . There really is no comparision between modern compounds and recurves . Good luck with your new bow - it's a whole new world . regards Perry

Well, you did an awesome job of hitting the marke, Cooke! Great form, a very natural, fluid instinctive style which was something to behold!

Me, on the other hand... well, to quote the fellow from "The Gods Must Be Crazy" - "I don't want to talk about it!"

Cheers, Ben

are you shooting off the shelf or from an elevated rest, some curves prefer one over the other. 2117's are a good hunting option for a 60# curve or longbow. Most "instinctive shooters" gap beyond 30m.

Yep, many bowhunters have a couple of tricks up their sleeve to hit the mark at various ranges. A really good investment are the two DVDs, "Masters of the Barebow" volumes 1 and 2.
