Thought i would whip out for a shot nice and early this morning to see if the hares were still coming in. The hares had been pretty quiet so far this year, i thought i might not get many more chances to call one in until next spring.
On the drive out i saw 3 run across the road, i put that down as a good sign, hopefully i would have them running straight in to the call.
I set up for my first call only a short distance from the ute, got myself up on a good sized log and started calling. It wasn't long and i had one steeming in, but that was the problem, she ran straight past and stopped about 30 metres behind me, standing up on her back legs looking to see where the comotion had been comming from. I now had to try and turn around without causing any alarm to the hare. i managed to do this, then gave another short call, this bought the hare into about 8 metres where she sat almost broadside for me. My arrow slipped through her chest, she was dead on her feet, managing to only make another 15 metres.
The rest of the morning was spent whistling foxes, and missing a young one, but thats a different story.

Howie i use a Scotch preditor call, have done for the last 4 years and had great success. Although this year they dont seem to be calling in as late in the season. It might have something to do with the weather being a bit cooler this summer.

well done mate. i had a go at calling hares in a few days ago. i saw two big hares feeding so i concealed myself against a shrub, got the wind right and had a go, only to see them run up the hill and into the bush away from me:confused: anybody know why this is? iv'e never been shown how to call them so i might be doing it wrong.

Dont worry to much Dan, they quite often take of the other way. The best way i have found to call is to start off with some slow moaning type calls, do this for 30, 40 seconds, and then i start into a bit of an upbeat type call, the same rhythem as if i was whistling for foxes. It doesn't always work but this is the best way i've found to bring the hares in. There maybe other methods that people use and i'd like to here how they go about it.
Just keep trying, you never know what your next call might bring in.
