Hi guys n gals,

Went for a bit of a scout on one of my new properties yesterday to see what the place was like, started the walk at about 9am and went to one spot where i saw goats sitting in the hills a few days prior but came up empty handed and only saw 1 roo.

I decided to do a bit of a whistle in a spot that looked good for foxes but again came up empty handed after about 15mins of whistling i didn't get a hint of anything interested, so from this point we decided to go straight up the hill in hopes of finding some goats sunning themselves.

Walked a fair distance and didn't see a thing until we got right to the top where i cought a nanny on top of a rock watching in my general direction and she end up busting me when i moved in closer thinking she had moved down the hill but really had only moved behind some trees.

I walked through the trees to see where she had gone and met up with a small mob of about 10 goats and they were more interested in feeding than walking away so i sat for 10 mins and watched them so i could plan where i could go so they would walk past me, after realising they were only moving slowly down the hill and away from me i skipped across the top and worked my way down, but by the time i got through the thick scrub at a pain stakingly slow rate i realised that they weren't moving closer to me anymore they had stopped under a tree to feed so i had to make my way towards them through more thick and noisy scrub.

I got through the scrub to a little clearing and sat there to see if i could hear them and noticed two younger goats move almost in front of me then turned down a different track, i then closed in to 10m or so and drew on a small black billy, aimed and shot hitting him through the chest, he took off up the hill about 30m fell over and rolled down some small rocks at which point the billy had left his mob for a better place.

The resulting billy was:

After the photos i went back to where i shot him and picked my arrow out of a tree 20m past where i had shot him.

Throughout this stalk i heard a good sized mob making noise on the hill over to the left of us so from here we went to those goats to have a look, after getting there in record time i spent maybe 20mins watching and picking out the billy i wanted while making sure not to get spotted by the 15 or so sheep sunning on some rocks 30m from me.

After thinking they were headed down hill to the dam i decided to ambush them on a pad that was going down the hill that the goats were on where there was some tree cover. We made it half way down when a mob of about 50-60 sheep ran over the hill where we were sitting and spooked the sheep and goats, what looked like everything took off up the hill along with my hopes of a good billy, until i moved in for a closer look where they were going and spotted a small group of maybe 6 goats feeding about 40m away from me with a really nice sized black billy.

At this point there was no real cover except for the stinging nettles in front of me, so it was through the stinging nettles i went, took maybe 20-30 mins to come right into this mob, making sure i had every angle covered and was not spotted, i got into 7m when the billy gave me a decent shooting area but the catch was.....he was going to move 1 of 2 ways, forwards behind a tree or turn away from me and show me his bum so i knew the best shot was right in front of me (nothing wrong with the shot but i was enjoying being this close to a goat with good cover), so i drew my bow, stood up and didn't get spotted by and of his friends around him so i took my time with the shot.

I released and the bit of extra time taken gave me a perfect shot through his heart. Sadly i didn't get a photo of this good fella as i was buggered, time was running out and still had a decent walk ahead of us.

All in all this was a really good hunt and felt good that in the time i have spent away from bows i could still settle myself down and take my time (will pay off for deer season :D).

I'd like to thank my girlfriend katie who got it on video and was my forward scout to the first mob of goats while she was sitting on a cliff above them filming and pooed herself when the goats that split from the first mob jumped up the cliff she was standing on LOL.

Cheers SG.

Spider, over here in Bathurst we just walk out the door, whistle a few times and the goats come runnin', then just shoot the biggest billy, easy mate. You should try it........LOL
Nice work Sparra, a good day out, cheers.....

Good onya mate. You look to be pretty darn handy with the bow, despite a period of absence.

By the way...what is the critter in your avatar? Weird looking sucker...

Was a section cut out of a bigger pic of 3 pigs i shot, i think in the first month of shooting with a bow i had gotten about 5 pigs on 3 different hunts.
