Well this all started on Saturday afternoon when matt (sharpshooter) came over for a day hunt (sat-sun.). As soon as he arrived we set up and headed out, after walking about 1km we reached are destination (as we call it “The Forest” its about .700-1km squared of hilly hills covered in shrub and eucalyptus trees). After taking off are shoes we headed on up along some nice game trails, spotting several hares… well stepping on several hares:D lol and spotting heaps of roo’s. We trekked on to find a rabbit digging beneath some shrubs, matt waited for a clear shot at what I approximated to be 25m... the arrow falling about 1cm short had the bunny bounding through the thick webbed scrub, we travelled on to see a few more hares that nearly met my left foot…:D
The next morning we were up a bit late 8:30, I got up and went out to see what the weather was like but that was after I blasted the music to wake matt up… anyways there were to young foxes digging about on a nearby hill, we watched there actioned till eventually they disappeared into the blackberries, after breaky we were setting up and spotted the foxes, I told to matt to head up to the corner paddock, because that’s were I thought they would cross, Sure enough they appeared there 20 metres in front of matt but they went to quick passed him before he could settle the pin, but matt then started kissing and one turned and started coming back, at twenty metres matt released and arrow and it all looked good except we couldn’t find the fox or the arrow and i was about 80m away from him watching what was going on and had no idea if he got it or not… after that we travelled back to forest were we set up and sat for a while hoping something would pass by us… but after about an hour of sitting, nothing… we then headed to the hare spot were three hares bounded away from us… I travelled on to spot a nice fallow doe eating at some grass under a tree, matt ten metres away from me had no idea it was even there, so matt kept travelling, and the deer heard his movements, so I drew while it was focused on matt and eventually settle the 20m pin behind the shoulder and let the arrow go… if anyone has ever hunted fallow deer you might know that they are as quick as lighting, by the time the arrow had arrived it just clipped its back leg… only several blotches of blood were on the arrow and to specs of blood at the scene, we travelled for hours trying to hind the deer till eventually I spotted it walking up and over a hill…but we never got close enough after that due to falling light…
Monday after school…
Well Monday after school I got all my stuff ready to go and head out to get this deer… after hours of walking through the forest… no deer in sight… till I went to there bedding area… I walked into the gorse-bush beds to see this head prop up and sprint away after cursing and thinking to my self about the what coudlers shoulder and woulders. I started heading home as light was rapidly fading… on the way home I was looking in the paddocks…AND THERE IT WAS:o!! Eating in the corner paddock, I used the creek line to get to where I wanted to, I propped up to see it still eating away at the grass... I drew and settled my pin right behind its front leg at twenty metres and let the fmj with a razor sharp ribby fly straight through the deer exactly where I put the pin, it went about two or three metres before it stumbled over… this was one of my best experiences I have ever had and to all you other junior hunters never give up because you never know what is around the next corner… thanks for reading
Sorry bout the bad pics my dad left the good camera at work….
