View Full Version : silencers
After playing with silencer materials and the Chrono for a while I made some observations that might be of interest.
Beaver balls are just as quiet as any other material {look better too}
Beaver balls are faster than cat whiskers.{They weigh less.}
Any Silencers placed closer to the tips are faster than when placed at 1/4 or 1/3 positions.I place them as close to the tip as i can and still have a quiet shot.This varies from bow to bow.all silencer materials slow a bow down.the lighter they are the better .

a couple questions pete, do you kill the beaver before taking his balls and how long did you actually play with them? :lol:

Pete
You will have to forgive the aussie sense of humour mate. I found when I was over there that some things were lost in the translation. :lol: :lol:
I thought it was great!!!!!!!!
Not sure what the Beaver thought though.
I have never liked the cats wiskers, I tried them for a while but they made to bow rough to shoot. Normally people use too many strands and they are too long, and very often they will double up on them and usually they are in the wrong place, as Pete said the closer they are to the tip the better they work . Cats wiskers add too much weight where as the fur silencers weight next to nothing, I make my silencers out of polar fleece...Glenn...

LOL ow **** didnt realise it was trad topic :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: ,
just cliked one new posts since last visit .
sorry guys
I use string leeches on my martin hatfield and they seem to work as good as anything else I've tried except they are more compact, easier to install and don't collect burs these combined with brush buttons is all I use.

pardon my ignorance but I don't know what most of these silencers are you are talking about. Leeches, cats whiskers, polar fleece and beaver balls? great names but which ones are rubber like the ones I have? and where can I get the others?
Beaver balls reminds me of a Ren & Stimpy cartoon!
G'Day Ed, you might find that the rubber ones you have may not be as pretty as some, but be superior re performance, don't collect moisture, probably cheaper etc. :)
You will get most types from most archery suppliers. To look at some pictures you might punch in "archery string silencers" (or similar) into your search engine, you will more than likely see heaps. Hope this helps :)
Just checked, it works ok, if you put the above into Google, various suppliers come up, wiil give you a look at some others :)
I use wool puffs on my curve with my flemish twist and it is heaps quiet, but saps the speed a bit. And on my other string for the curve I have cats whiskers cut down so that they make a nice little pom-pom like ball about 1.5" in diamiter, they look great and do the job with out the extra dangly length to them.
Beaver Balls??? Why waste two animales why not just use teh cats whiskers and also utilise the CATS BALLS at the same time. Waste not want not :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Personally i use the spider silencers on Black Widow and they work just fine
You got it Feral, best things ever :D
got me thinking again on this thread.
Missus has picked up a Black Bear Hunter recurve 45#, nice bow indeed but noisy as hell.
Now which silincer is best for a recurve? I have used the rubber whisker things on my longbows but seen people using what looks like hard rubber balls that contact the limbs on recurves (it was a takedown) are these ok on a one peice? are they a pain to keep in place or is there a better silencer for recurves?
Ed
It sounds like you are talking about brush buttons and they seem to work fine on my recurves but I use them in conjunction with string leaches which are small and light and do the job.
BEAR
I just made some new silencers for my new curve, just polarfleece cut in round circle and sliced.
They work a treat.
