shoulder shots

i went out for a quick hunt today and had a shot on a billie from around 20 meters and it hit it in the shoulder blade and pretty much just ran off.
im shooting 50 pound hoyt havoc and was wondering how far your arrow goes through

Dunno about billies... But took the perfect line fishing today. Nearly point blank at 55lb with a solid fishing arrow and it bounced off. Maybe 10" of water to the ray.

Musta had a hard head. lol

I shot a Billy in the shoulder blade and got penetration up to an inch from the fletches. What broad heads were you using?

Sometimes you just hit that point of bone or joint in the thickest part or on the perfect angle and the pentration is just not there. I remember clearly one day, Pete was shooting at a doe when a bird swooped him and he pulled the shot and hit her in the back leg. She ran and we found blood but no deer. The arrow was not in very far from what we could tell.
Two days later I was setting an ambush for an approaching stag in the same area and came across a dead doe. I saw a broken shaft hanging from the knee joint on the back leg and figured it was Pete's. She had doubled back on us and got below us without knowing and that is why we did not find her at the time.
Anyway, I grabbed the shaft and pulled with a lot of force and ended up flat on my butt. That head had only entered the depth of the head itself plus one inch of shaft. This was a zwickey two blade head, shot out of 70lb switchback. The head nicked her femoral artery and she probably went down quick, but it just goes to show that sometimes, no matter what you use, you may get poor penetration.

i found a dead goat the other day that had a hole in the back of the shoulder blade. This hole had calcified over with a large lump of bone. there was also a 6 inch length of aluminium arrow amongst the bones. The wound must have occured a long time ago, its amazing what they can survive with.
