TOMMO

Had a good avro session on Sunday. Got to the property a little too early (always eager) to search for a Fallow. Thought a few calls for a Fox were in order while I waited for the temp and light to drop before searching for a deer.
First stand this dog came promptly in to the predator call and wore a Gold tip.

Had several other stands and called and missed another young one.
With the shadows finally lengthening a slow snoop along the ridge was in order. Almost straight away I spooked a reasonable Buck that was bedded down. 'Go slower, go slower, you've got eyes, so use them w*#@er' I said to myself. I searched a little more carefully after that and was welcomed an hour later by the sight of four black and two menil does feeding on a shallow, open slope below.
A quick belly crawl put me into thirty metres of the group and with plenty of long grass obscuring the feeding deer's eyes, I was able to get into something of a crouched shooting position.
The black lead doe started to feed back up the hill towards me and was picking at some briars. With another stand of briars between her and I there was every chance she would head to those only fifteen metres away.
Angling my body for a possible shot was easy but when a mob of roo's came banging and crashing out of the scrub I thought it was going to be all over. All ears were up and alert but they soon relaxed and went back to feeding and with that the lead doe headed staight to the briars close by and turned broadside. I half drew and then as I was coming to full draw lifted up onto both knees, she stopped and looked up at the movement but it was way too late for an escape. A stainless steel Snuffer through both lungs brought her down in twenty metres. Stoked! It's been a couple of years since I've downed a deer and to get the latest one with the Widow was a great feeling.
