Just curious has anybody tried any of the freeze dried meals available in the camping stores?

I have used all sorts of those dried meals over the years, Backpackers Pantry, Mountain House and the like and they are pretty fair meals if you want to keep the weight down and still get a balanced meal.
These days though I am more interested in what I can make myself. There are plenty of books out there to help you make your own dried meals and you can make some bloody good stuff with your home dehydrator.
My four favourite books
Gorp, Glop and Glue Stew
Prater and Mendenhall
ISBN 0-89886-017-2
-------------------
Cooking the one burner way
Gray and Tilton
ISBN 0-934802-91-2
----------------
Simple foods for the pack
Axcell, Cooke and Kinmont
ISBN 0-87156-757-1
--------------------
And the best of them all for learning how to dry great food
Dry It - You'll like it
Macmaniman
ISBN 0-9611999-0-6
--------------
Good outdoor stores should carry these books

Hey Mick, do you use a vacuum machine to store your meals?

Nope
I make the meals up in the week before a trip and pack them in zip lock bags.
A lot of the meals use fresh ingredients too (like the cheese and polenta stew Mmmm) so you can't complete packing them until you are ready to go.
