Post your entries for the Outback photo comp here fellas and ladies. This competition is never looking like slowing down and the entries are getting harder to judge every month. Keep up the top efforts and thank you for your efforts and to Woody once again for supporting it.

Bought a new Kenko 420-800mm zoom lens + a 2x tele-converter making it actually 840-1600mm. To see what it could do I took this photo of the moon. Lens was set at approximately 1200mm.

RAGE 2 blade BH mate, make really nasty, nasty holes!

Little story about this fella, a bigger buck was punishing him, and chasing him all over the place, when I managed to finally get in apposition for the shot, but as they cut my cent, of course the bigger 220+ model was not in position to get a clean shot so this fella was the consolation prize!:o

Thanks Adam,

This month I am going to work really hard to get some good quality N.American wildlife photos to share with you all. I'm off next weekend to do a bit of turkey hunting in S. Dakota. I will be passing through three different state on my way. I will make sure the camera lens is snapping. That's a nice fallow in your avatar, and I see you're wearing ASAT camo. Have you tried Enigma yet? I love both patterns, but I really love the durability of the Enigma (www.enigmacamo.com (http://www.enigmacamo.com)). Chuck Pensly, the man who helped resurrect ASAT, split from ASAT a few years ago and started Enigma. He was tired of the financial backers of ASAT not wanting to further delevop the product. His advancement of a tried and tested pattern have been incredible. The only drawback that I have found with the Enimga...it does not lend itself well to temps above 75 degrees fehrenheit (it's made from wolfskin fabric). Chuck is working on a light weight 3D suit though. You might want to check out their website.

adam

I look forward to some more of your photos Huckleberry, I know Chuck as I dealt with him for some time while importing asat Camouflage, Enigma looks the goods and if they bring out a tough 3d camouflage Ill be keen to try some out.

Awesome Mat. That head would look great on my wall!!!
Jezza, thanks for the comment. My wife took the photo with my camera because the deer were on her side of the car so it was quicker for her to just jump out, focus and fire away!!
I had at the time, a canon 30D DSLR (which i sold a few weeks ago, to help fund my new bowhunting project). That camera took 5 photos per second, which enables my wife to get the motion photos of them jumping the fence. The photo was taken with a 500mm telephoto lens.
We both share her camera now which is a newer model of the same camera, a 40D.

Adam,

I was on my way to Africa two years ago and Chuck met me at Dulles International Airport in Virginia. He drove all the way down from Pennsylvania to hand delivered my new Engima. He made a promise to get it to me before I departed for the dark continent. It was a promise he kept. I repect the man and look on him as though he were my brother. A "legend"....I think so! It does my heart well to know that you gents feel the same way toward Mr. Pensly.

Like the Speed Goat pic Huck, that's a good buck over on the far left, where abouts was that taken - Kansas?
Not a lot of cover, looks like you got fairly close.
How widespread are they in the US? Have you ever got one with the bow?
Thanks mate, nice pic.

Aaron,

That photo was taken right smack dab in the middle of Colorado-an area called South Park. The closest town would be Fairplay, Colorado. The buck on the left is a scrapper-his left prong is completely snapped off. It's hard to believe these creature range at 9000 feet above sea level!

They are very widespread throughout the west. Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado support the most number of animals. They are one of my favorite species to hunt. The reason...you see them all day! It's great sport trying to get close enough for a good bow shot. They have incredible eyesight, and of course, lopes can go from zero to sixty mph (no kidding) in nothing flat! A non-resident archer (e.g. auzzies) can purchase an over the counter license for roughly $250 US. There are many public areas to hunt here in Colorado-access is pretty good. I would be more than willing to help anyone wanting to give it a go. I will be chasing them this year for sure!

Cheers.

Thanks for the speed goat info Huck. I think they are an amazing creature, it must be good to know you can access them on public land. Unfortunately I don't think I will be over to the US in the near future - I'm saving up for a new bow quiver at the moment :P - But if I can win the lottery Pronghorn, Black bear, Moose and Whitetail would all be on my list. In the meantime I'll just have to be satisfied with my foxes, pigs, goats and fallow.

I thought all you guys over there would be well into turkey mode now and not even thinking about pronghorn - If you happen to drill a big ole longbeard this season, don't forget your Aussie mates, I'm sure we'd all love to see a photo.

Thanks again, happy hunting.

All 3 are great photos.
I set my new game camera up in the loungeroom last night to test it out, hoping to get a photo of my dog, (even put dog biscuits in front of the camera!!lol).
I got up to go to the toilet and forgot about it.
Well, because it was a cool night, my old dog was too lazy to get out of bed, so the only photo i got was me in my budgie smugglers walking past on the way to the toilet!! (lucky its a wide angle). Im thinking about entering that photo in this comp!!!

Here are a few from this past weekend. I was hunting South Dakota for Merriams turkeys. I had a bit of luck with the camera, but failed to arrow any birds. I did take a shot at a 8.5" tom. I under estimated the range and hit just low. I'll be back after them in a few weeks (I'm pulling daddy duty this coming weekend). Enjoy the photos

wow great pics there. are they dall's sheep? would love to hunt one of them.

iamyourhuckleberry
28-04-08, 10:29 PM
They are actually Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep. They are one of the coveted members of the Wild "Sheep Slam". There are about 8000 of them in the state of Colorado. About 100 are hunted every year. It takes many years to successfully draw a tag for the opportunity to hunt one. Needless to say, the success rate is very low (around 4% in some areas). The reason...they move back up into that high country after the snow melts. Most people who draw the tag and can afford to hunt them are well advanced in age. Combine the age factor with the steep terrain (keep in mind the trees stop growing at 12,500 feet above sea level)...Well, it's a recipe for slim success. I was lucky and drew a tag back in 1992. I killed a ram. I'm trying like crazy to draw a desert bighorn tag (Colorado has that species too). Only 4 desert ram tags go out each year. There are about 1700 people applying for them-the four lucky individuals are randomly selected!
