After years of just using my ex-Army pack and a couple of Army waterbottles, I finally bit the bullett and purchased a new hydration pack.

Excellent bit of gear.

What do you fellow bowhunters carry in your pack?

The last time this topic was listed I picked up a few tips.

Mine has a Fox whistle, First Aid kit, Bow tool kit, Spare Broadheads, a boning knife, an all-purpose knife, Tomahawk, Compass, Rangefinder, Binoculars, Deer drag harness, Digital camera (sometimes, if I remember), Rubber gloves, Matches, Pen and paper, Plastic bags, Toilet paper, Protein bars and a CDMA phone.

I have a hydration bag with a 2 litre bladder and if it«ÉŸs real hot I shove a bottle of Gatorade in too. Inside there is a selection of knives, a diamond steel and whetstone, Gerber multitool, a minimag torch and a headlamp, snakebite kit, cord for hanging game etc, a mesh stuff sack (containing, game bags (pillow cases), latex gloves and string shopping bags for carrying the meat home), a fleece stuff sack for what ever food I want to take, roll on aeroguard sunscreen, GPSr, UHF, binoculars, rangefinder, camera, a fox whistle, piece of survey tape, compass, small writing pad and a pen.
Spares batteries for everything
The rangefinder has it«ÉŸs own pouch on the right side of the pack and can be accessed easily with minimum movement and the GPSr has its own pouch on the left side that also can be accessed easily.
I also print out a map of my hunting area with my waypoints marked on it and laminate it. That gets stuffed inside the pack too.

IN PACK ON PACK
spare whistle and broadheads, food, 1x bladder for winter or short hikes(3) or 3 bladders for hot all day trips 8lt total. first aid kit, hunting knife leather man tool, skinning and meat prep gloves, spotting scope if in open country, head lamp, survival kit, meat cover hang bag, face and hand wipes, range finder on chest straps, bone saw/wood saw foldable type, swipe sharpener, Fox scent cover spray, scouting camera, picture camera outter pack easy access.

Now sometimes this pack is short of the trail camera, spotting scope, range finder and a few other things. this pack also breaks down to a waist pack.

now thats the pack I take when it a big hunt or thinking Im going to be lugging a animal out. As it has trophy straps, skin straps and meat straps.
I also just got a small hydration pack $35 job holds 3lts of water and all necessary.

You ever packed all day in 48 plus degrees coach. 8 ltrs is better then dehydrating out here mate and is quite easy to carry. Back home Id pack all day with 2.5 ltrs not here.

Barry, my pack is a Field Line hydration back pack in Mossy Oak Break Up.

From the manufacturers listing;
"It features a 70oz. removable hydration system, multiple pockets with heavy duty zippers, fully adjustable padded straps with quick release buckles, top mounted grab/carry handle, with a quiet saddle cloth exterior (not shiney)".

I bought it from an on-line store in the USA.

With a full load it is very comfortable, even when being jolted around climbing rocks on the 4-wheeler.

I did have a big pack but found that humping it all day i got aching shoulders. Now i just carry a 2lt camel back and the rest is in a camobum bag i got off ebay that holds all my first aid my camera and the knife and binos on the side. it is very easy to drop off quietly for the final stalk and does not put any strain on my shoulders. The other prob with the big pack i found was that my shooting form was not as good unless i practiced with it on. has anyone else ever noticed this??

Adam, just wondering if the water tastes any different out of the $35 dollar pack than out of a dearer 'camalbak' type, just wondering as want to buy some extra bladders to go in my daypack.

Cheers

I have two different packs that I use for hunting and which one I take out with me depends on the terrain and the length of a hunt.
I have an Ultimate Directions torso pack that holds about 10 litres of gear and has a 2 litre bladder, and I have a Camelbak that is 25 litres of gear and has a 3 litre bladder. I also have a cheaper bladder ($15) that holds 2 litres and can go in the Camelbak.
I use the torso pack the most because it rides low down and is very streamlined, I don«ÉŸt have to take it off when going through fences even. I just bought an ASAT suit from Luke and the top fits comfortably over the top of the pack so I am totally camo now.

Both the packs are comfortable to wear all day and many a time I have hung my string bags full of game meat off them and not had a problem.

Ha ha pitty no the water doesn't taste any different mate(perth water taste like dirt anyway). I found some good 3lt hydration bags the other day for $15 each on special at a camping store. my first hydration bag I brought seperatly for my big hunting pack. The second one came with my little day pack $35 with bladder. And my third one was a gift. Most camping stores carry the bladders and all the tubes these days. Bladder bags are a god sent for us on the move bowhunters. The only time I pull up and sit down these days is to apreciate a downed animal or to eat. Just lets you get in that bit more ground and that may lead to a good trophy.

I got a Outerlimits bluetounge 2lt hydro pack when in NZ (at cost price) :D
It has heaps of zippered compartments for all teh basics needed for a day hunt. I am wanting to get a bigger pack for longer hikes/hunts. But the bluetounge does the job nicely for now and is also handy when fishing off the rocks.

vallhala, it is a buck knife, ive had it for about 4 years but have only been using it for the past 2.
They are a great knife, easy to sharpen and hold their edge for a long time
