Where?

They are very wide spread (thanks to doggers and the nature of the environment). Have a think about what pigs need, then grab a chair and a big helping of Google Earth. You should be able to narrow down a few areas...then you just need permission....

50 - 90mins drive from Perth's CBD puts you in range of 4 pockets of reds, 2 (possibly 3/4) of fallow, probably about 8-12 pockets goats, pigs throughout scarp (although density varies, although a few 'thick' patches) and many foxes and rabbits.
won't find anything though without hard foot-slogging and spending lots of potential hunting time allocated to searching. 4wd helps, but not essential.

Hey you blokes your giving all my hunting spots away haha.
Danny the Perth Hills are rife with game as Hawkeye said deer, but also pigs, goats, rabbits, foxes, dingoes, cats to name a few. You dont have to go into the hills to get them though, they are spead out everywhere in pockets around our state.
I was lucky i had permission to hunt CALM land for 14 years and i have alot of private land aswell, but alot of the areas that are good are illegal to hunt in obviously so i wouldnt recommend it. Safest way is as has been discussed on here a million times find some private properties.
You get good properties this is what you get, last week i shot 6 pigs in a mates orchard including these two young boars.
good luck.

his query was refined to his possible threshold Tower ie Perth Hills - not "elsewhere in the state" as another ball game altogether and he can't realistically get there (at this stage).
eg - i shot a 12 point wild elk in Perth Hills 2 weeks back, but this is a bowhunting site so don't wanna post that pic as irrelevant.
edit - no "hunting spots given away" - goodluck finding them, and if you do you deserve to bag one. and dingoes in Perth Hills... circa 1950 that last warrigal or what?

hawkeye you are a spanner, the point was there is game in the perth hills he wasn't trying to say he shot the with a bow just that they were in the hill's.

ok i'm a spanner then.
pigs are everywhere in Perth Hills (Danny knows that i'm sure).

Pigs may not be everywhere in Perth hill but the photo shows that there are pigs.

i've got a whole socket set i reckon Clinglish.
point taken and if i've had a wonkey shot then apologies. i did try and contribute to a thread going under that mentioned nothing about deer etc that are there for the taking.
ps i assumed shooting pic's were deleted by admin or at best frowned upon here?

yep you are a knob jockey hawkeye, you cant help yourself as always, seen any big cats lately?
Im not sure what your dingoe comment was all about but for other normal people out there just for your info a property i hunt on trapped and shot 43 in two years about five years on the eastern side of Perth Hills and they do have evidence. I have only personally seen one and one of my dogging mates had two attack his pig dogs whilst they were bailing two large sows, that story was about 10 years ago though. good luck.

they're there Spidey but again - a lotta groundwork involved.
as you're only a young bloke then the good news is by the time you have your car license and can get about there should be a whole lot more so things looking up for ya.
same as pigs - more pigs about now near Perth than ever and i can't see that situation changing in near future - should only get better.
however, be patient and practise and make the most of what you have now - won't be easy trying to knock off deer without the groundings (rabbits/goats) as a huge higher gear change altogether.
ps - sorry if i came out overboard there Tower (you mean wild dogs (pig doggers strays) mate - or real dingoes? be plenty of "normal" people (like Rangers at Avon/John Forrest ect) would find that hard to believe), honest. that's apologies (posts) times two now. forget anymore lectures please. i blame the internet medium for 1%of it, rest is myself. confusion wouldn't have happened if talking around campfire though i'm sure.
pps - slightly associated aside - can a mod maybe clarify posting of shooting pic's (somewhere on the forum/sticky) as impression i had was def'n no go?
ppps - Chris and Clingish (good mates i know and good stuff) - i honestly realised the own errors of my way, but never got a chance to say so/edit before you both sooo quickly jumped in within minutes. This thread's been on here for days and yet both of you had no input... until i jumped in with a silly that is! pity can't give Spidey a few game tips (both Perth bowhunters)about Perth Hills. i've apologised publically and privately and would've done so regardless (easy calling someone a ******) of your comments.

Yeah why is it that people don't want to share locations of any good game areas?
spiderbait24
19-04-08, 06:44 PM
cause they hard to find :(

I have spent 10 years securing areas to hunt. I have lost a few to back stabbers and tosseres that did the wrong thing. I lost one recently to the farmers wife coz she saw some rspca show. I think if you want to hunt then you have to put in the hard work to find a place and then protect it like gold because there are some dodgy b@stards out there . If you want to share your places mercy go rite ahead. But if I am pretty choosey about who I take hunting and so are alot of other guy's.

Dodgy how?
I don't even know where to start. Seems all you guys here have a HUGE knowledge of where to look for game, what they need, what sort of terrain is most likely to prove suited to a certain animal etc..
Other guys here have it in their own backyard, or know mates with farms and all those luxuries.
These are the things I don't have.
And sure, I'll tell you guys where my only hunting ground is, my backyard. Those targets can sure be elusive at times.. luckily I have a 350fps xbow so they can't string-jump :P

i understand your frustration mate but Clinglish is right.
It takes ages to develop and find good places to be able to legally hunt. In small spots like Perth Hills its not the sort of thing you can tell everyone about because word of mouth travels quick and ive seen it in fishing, diving and hunting heaps of times. Sooner or later you catch someone out who you wouldnt have thought would cheat on your ground but they do.
You just need to ask around all your friends and family and im sure youll find someone that has a property somewhere, it could be a friend of a friends uncles brother in law and your in. Getting referred by someone is a dam side easier than knocking on doors for the average hunter.
And just like hunting once youve got your first property the next one is easier.
Easiest tip for you and Danny as far as game goes is to look for properties that back onto or are surrounded by state forrest and are close to our main dams, rivers or permanent water of some kind.

What do people mean when they say they get cheated or dodged around though?

i think he means you tell someone something 'on the quite' or good enough to take them to a hunting spot of yours (that's been hard won), only to find them there next weekend (possibly with mates, possibly blabbing about it elsewhere (like horror of all horrors - the net)) without your knowledge.
most landowners, especially close to Perth, can only tolerate so much hunting pressure, and the less crew stomping your turf the more secure it is (only have to leave a gate open, rubbish or be uncourteous and landowner may not allow any access to anymore hunting for anyone).
like i assume with Tower/Clinglish - no one rolled out the red carpet for me either Mercy - took a heap of stomping (without a bow even) to find game and then the dreaded (gotta be tactfull) doorknocking.
half the hunt is finding the game/property... after that it's all fun really as you know you always get another chance.
i've done endless hours grape/olive picking, brought gifts etc to maintain that standing on hard won properties i have premisssion.

Okie dokie, I can appreciate that.
So apart from somebodys land, is it actaully legal to go slinging arrows around in the hills? Or anywhere not too far from Perth?

no mate it is not legal you run the risk of loseing you bow your car and get a fine

i reckon you can now see why spots aren't thrown around mercy.
i bushwalk a lot in public land without a bow so can't get into trouble. then when i've found game 'sign' and only then do i bother a few landowners backing onto that bush for hunting permission. took me a couple summers to find a pocket of deer for example - hard yakka alright. lucky enough to have put 4 mates onto them (who also have hunting mates who also have hunting mates etc) and it's incredibly rare that one hasn't spilt the beans so to speak - mates like that hard to come by.
when you get permission then very rarely does that landowner like you telling others or taking mates there either, as many have problems with poachers. for example, a pig spot i have in hills the bloke in neighbouring property got assaulted by a pig dogger he challenged on his land one night (basically at his back door) and many landowners have more problems with such feral humans than they do with feral animals and don't want you putting others onto the area for asaid reason.
here's a site to help you i use all the time to help pinpoint an area of interest and kills google earth for outta Metro stuff:
http://www.landonline.com.au/skyviewwa/content/asp/skyviewwa_index.asp?product_group_id=78
ps another BIG tip for you Mercy - looks like big changes to WA firearms laws are imminent and you'll soon need written property permission to own a crossbow, so i wouldn't procrastinate too long.
mercyfulfate
20-04-08, 11:39 PM
Written property permission from who?
I better go get that 175lb crossbow this week before they become raped by the law.
hawkeye
20-04-08, 11:45 PM
from a landowner giving you permission to shoot on their property.
old news now, but the boffins are out to re-write the rules (as if it wasn't already the hardest state by miles to own a firearm (and 'firearm/weapon' isn't my definition of a crossbow))... in fact WA already pretty liberal as far as crossbow ownership goes (compared to real firearms), but about to change (new legislation imminent).
hopefully i'm wrong (but sadly doubt it).
won't matter what you buy beforehand if/when legislation passed if get caught with it (confiscation and worse).
Hawkeye just to clarify mate, it's never been against the rules to post pictures of game shot with a rifle on this forum. Especially if it relates to a thread or can help someone with their bowhunting endevours as in the picture posted on this one.
We have even had several threads directly discussing firearms and hunting with them here on TBGA over the years. Many of us own and use both types of tools (firearms and bows) in our hunting lives and it's natural to sometimes use our experiences gained from hunting with firearms here in our discussions on bowhunting. That being said though we are a website dedicated to bowhunting and we'd like it to stay that way, so any threads directly discussing firearms should be posted in the soapbox section. Such as a picture of the wild elk you rifle shot not too long ago, hint, hint.;)
hawkeye
21-04-08, 08:23 PM
thanks for the clarification Paul - i recall getting frowned upon for posting shooting pic's on here ages back is why i was confused. as for the soapbox, i'll save the elk (not soemthing see everyday just outta Perth) for the plethora of shooting sites dedicated to such pic's. but when i get one with the bow you'll be one of the first to know about it (hear me beating 'curve against chest and yelling like Tarzan across the continent). ta.
