View Full Version : Restricted Item?
Ok well my grandfather brought my bow up here via plane last night. But when he tried to check it in at the Melbourne airport (he was flying virgin) he was informed that the bow was a restricted item and as such had to be signed for and fill in some paper work. I am wondering if this is the norm as i have flown with the bow several times and there has never been a problem.

I've had the same happen sometimes.
It has been my experiance that it depends on who the check in person is, not really the airline.
When I flew to Adelaide for a hunt last time I had to check it as a restricted item in Cairns. When I flew the same airline home from Adelaide I checked it as normal baggage.
It isnt really a big deal.

Virgin used to check them as restricted. They now don't so you can just put it through as normal baggage. I still like to send it restricted as I hope that means they won't be as likely to lose it.
When i went over to New Zealand last month flying virgin boths ways it was an restricted item. No big deal thoe all they do is full a tag and you have to collect it from a customs officer and get your half of the tag signed. Good idear thoe as you know your bow is in good hands. ;)
Have flown interstate and internationally (to both Japan and China) with my bow. I have only ever checked it on as over sized luggage in my lockable hardcase.
Never had a problem. :D
Will be coming home in June and return via Malaysia.. hope they're as nice
Mate i work for an airline company but for security,s sake i cant say which one but how ever it is checkable luggage for most companies but also it is how the person checking you in is taught aswell and if they think it needs to be restricted well just smile and wave mate its all i can say to do
In future if they ask you what it is just Tell them it's sporting goods, thats all I do .

OOOOOOOooooo don't start that debate in here mate  :P:P:P:P
When I've traveled with it, I've said I am an archer and my bow is sporting equipment.
:D
Mate I caught a flight from Townsville with one of those large freezer type bags as carry on luggage, when it went through the x-ray machine the lady asked if it was meat? I simply replied yes but it was actually a Chittal stags cape and it stayed on the floor between my feet back to Melbourne.

I always tell them it's hunting gear .They always check it seperate and it save me a fortune in excess luggage fee's .also it is handled seperatly from the regular luggage so it has a better chance of getting on the right plane and arriving in one piece. IMO
Yeh that was the only positive, the bow being checked separately brought the weight back down to what he was allowed. When asked what was in there he explained that it was a bow for target shooting purposes.
Another good thing that because its "sporting equipment" its only classed as 5kgs of your allowed 20kgs of weight. Which is handy as my case was nearly 10kgs fully loaded. :D
