G'day.

I've been wondering why blokes who hunt from Pig rig utes leave the liver and stomach etc hanging out once the pig is hung of the ute?

It looks like the gut is removed but why not the other organs, and if its to feed to the dogs why not cut it out rather than leave it hanging outside of a dirty old piggy?

Got me stumped and I've only ever seen pics of it. One here if you don't know what I mean...

Any thought?

G'day,

Mate it's to cool them down so that they don't go off.

As the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys are required to be left intact with the beast for the purposes of testing to pass the carcass for human consumption export. As they are offal they will go off quickly if they aren't cooled down. Leaving them inside the body cavity stops them from cooling down and also the body cavity.

So the heart, lungs and liver are brought outside to cool quicker.

If you don't supply them to the chiller with those organs still intact, they won't accept your carcass.

Thanks

As has already been explained the heart, liver and lungs are left out so that they can cool down, these organs are needed to test for any diseases or parasites the pigs might have. Hopefully it wont be long before they reopen a box paying decent money up here and we can get back into it.

Hood, I figured if they were for eating you wouldn't want to get them all gruby. Sound like a good pie though, if they were clean. ;)

Robbo, Thanks that makes sense. Happen to know what tests do they do?

Cool Thanks.

Where can I find chillers to give the pigs to? Is it worth the diesel, or better frozen for pet food?

For a box to accept the pig they have to be head shot and you have to have completed an accreditation course and you ute has to be accredited(your tray and racks have to be either stainless steel or fully welded mild steel that has been hot dipped galvanisied) and you have to update your accreditation every year. And i as i recall in the early 1990's the boxes here in queensland at suratt and condamine were paying up to $2.30 a kg but the real good times were earlier than that when you used to be payed with a cash check that you used to be able to cash in town somewhere, and you payed no tax. Then the government got invloved and you had to supply your tax file number and you recieved invoices for each sale.

The box will still accept pigs that have been dogged as long as they have been stuck down the chest. At least that is my experience up here. We used to be getting $1.20 up here till you blokes in Queensland and NSW started shooting enough to keep them happy

Cheers, no box in NSW?

I've done a dog course, the game council one. Is that the same one? I'm still to get rid of the Hilux Surf and get an accredited ute though. Don't suppose you can hook up a rack on a trailer & get that accredited?

So if you dog pigs, sticking 'em in the neck is ok?

Thanks.

Sag,
If you've done the dogging course shouldn't you know these things? Didn't they teach you that stuff?

Sadly no. I was hoping to actually learn more about dogging, the hunting and processing stuff particularly. It was all only safety and ethics though. I haven't found dogging clubs or forums to learn more from, so any pointer would be greatly appreciated.

ive never seen anyone sticking in the neck, go the heart my friend.

I used to sell to a chiller and i saw the health inspector there a few times when they bought our pigs out. All he did was pulled out the organs eg liver and visually inspected them. It wasnt very technical, i dont know if things have changed but i wouldnt think they could do much more considering the amount that get put through. Most of the diseases they are looking for would be visual in those organs.

Interesting reading you blokes!! I know bugger all about pigs, but would like to know a lot more.
Do people shoot them and eat them themselves? If so, do they have to have the organs tested, or any other part of the carcass tested? Or do they just kill them and cut them up?
The reason im asking is because i have been led to beleive that wild pigs shouldnt be eaten because they eat carrion and can make you vey sick, even fatal.
Ive also heard that your supposed to round them up, then grain feed them for a period of time before eating them. Any truth in that? When i get a bit more competant with my bow i would love to go pig hunting!!!

theres all sorts of things happen, some people keep them, worm them, fatten them up and eat them. Personally i am a bit weary of eating pigs as guy i know caught something from eating one (not hydatit either) i cant remember the name at the moment, but it made him like half a zombie now. I have also seen photos of an operation someone had to have after getting hydatit sist, very nasty bug. Had to have alot of his intestines removed.

The only ones i have made sausages out of are ones that i have got from orchards that have been self fatened up in very good condition from a few months of eating good tucker.

You can usually tell looking at the overall health and condition of a pig if its worth touching and then its probably adviseable to have a look at/inside the major organs for abnormalities. If your not sure of what to look for probably search the net, theres no doubt something on there.

The government agencies advise not eating them at all, but obviously we export thousands of wild ones a year to Europe and i dont think we get many complaints from them, just have to be careful. If in doubt ditch it.
