Is it cheating if i am to go around my clubs courses and measure out the distances with a rangefinder from the peg to the target a week or so before a shoot?

Mmmm well it would give you an advantage over others but don't ranges have set distances i.e. 10, 20, 30m, etc??

if ur field courses are set up the same as ours then one of the hardest things about the shot is guessing the distance, so yeah personally i would consider it cheating....
good idea though....

a good rule of thumb is if you have to ask then yes it is
Here's a twist... don't the range captains (and assitants) do this when they are setting the course?
Don't they shoot in the comps as well?

in 3d range captains (and assitants) cant shot in comps
as fare as i no.... and yes if it's a 3d courses yes it is cheating
Is that for all 3d shoots or just higher level comps?
What about club shoots?

i think it's just for higher level comps shoots .... at my 3d club who ever set the range they still shoot ... but when it comes to a comp they dont

Same at my club, I think it is cheating, but at club shoots those that set the pegs know the distance and still shoot (and score really well surprisingly, hehe) so I guess you are just leveling the odds. At club shoots I have seen the pegs have only been set a day or two before.
I know I could certainly score ALOT higher if I knew the range, my estimations are not the best, hence when hunting I dont leave home without my rangefinder.

ok, so everyone thinks its cheating to pre measure the course but what if i was to measure each course as i shot it so i can refer to the measurements at anotehr club shoot?

Honestly, dont bother doing it in the long run it will help you learn to judge distances in your head and not have to rely on a rangefinder, very handy when there isn't much time to take a shot in the bush.

Good point...

If you are into shooting at other clubs 'comps' yes its cheating.
That's why there are restrictions re; cameras, rangefinders, large power binos. Weather its on the day or the week before
Or if you are shooting to keep your eye in for hunting you are doing yourself a disservice.
Ask all the other shooters at your club and see what they say. If they have no problem with you doing anything like that then it would be fine. BUT, you should then be put in a grade all on your own "bow hunter unlimited ranged distances already" or something like that.
I think it is cheating if your shooting a comp though.

ok, thanks for the awesome reply's :D I guess that i really will need to get better at judging the distances so i will probably be giving the rangefinder the flick from my list of 'wants'

Perry.I think the most important question is do you think it is cheating ?

i am thinking that it is giving me an advantage, thats for sure but i know that if i can get my distances more accurate then my score will go up for sure. majority of other people dont have the perfect judgment so they wont have perfect scores, so i guess it is cheating.
Thanks :)
Maybe you have to ask yourself if the Fresh Prince would do such a thing????

I heard of a bloke who had white dots around the focus bit of his bino's and had premeasured them so that when it was in focus he looked at which dot it was on and he knew the distance..Cheating in other words but in answer to your question Perry I think yes its cheating .

3DAAA are unmarked and the size of the target is not relevant to the distance shot, therefore ranging would be cheating?. In contrast to this the ABA paper round is set at distances relevant to the series of the target group.
Group 1 7 metres
Group 2 15 metres
Group 3 20 metres
Group 4 30 metres
Group 5 40 metres
All set at plus/minus 20%
Ranging an ABA course would be a waste of time (you should be able to guess the distance of the target, by the group)
ie. Group 5 Boar is set between 32 & 48 metres (35.5 - 52.5 yards) I visually walk the target in 10 yard steps and then also take into account how big he looks, I am normally accurate to within 1-2 yards.
I am also the Range Captain at our club.
Cheers
Ken
