View Full Version : To the call they come
Went out for a mid morning hunt on the weekend after a call from a property manager who was seeing plenty of Foxes on the place. I spotted three on the drive into the property but these were out of bounds at this stage, although access is a never ending work in progress that may soon see some fresh ground to explore.
I wasn't worried and the action was immediate with three Foxes coming in at my first stand. I never managed a shot with the swirling wind that spread my scent in the gully spooking two, with the third unseen till I moved and he bolted.
Nailed Fox four a little later in the morning at four metres as he came rushing in. He only made it five metres before succumbing to a pass through shoulder shot. He has a nice looking coat in the photo but his whole rump area was mange affected.

Fox five came in very fast and a close running shot into the chest should have pulled him up very quickly, but he somehow made it to the safety of a Wombat hole not far away. The broadhead produced a good blood trail and I am sure he would have expired shortly after entering the burrow.
Foxes six and seven both came angling in from the downwind side with predictable results once they were close.
I searched a few more gullies for no result before having to pull the pin and head off to other prior engagements.
Love hunting Foxes with the bow especially when the action is like that.
Nice goin' Tommo... plenty of action alright :)
Nice work Tommo! Mate if there is a Wombat living in that hole it will drag the fox out. Had one do it with big Ginger cat I nailed a few years back. Understandably, who would want a smelly dead fox in their house!
Nice work bloke:)
The combo of you and the widow has been on fire lately;)
keep em coming
Nice Tommy, must get out for a fox soon! :)

Have a little footage of the hunt here. All solo on a tripod so missed the actual impact. You can hear it though!

GoldGT I hate missing too and have missed at ridiculously close range. Keep at it and you will nail one.

Tommo, your footage is a great addition to your story mate - good work!
Would you mind spilling the beans on the type of caller you were using? Did you have it somehow mounted on your hip? I'd be very interested to know as I am currently using a Scotch Predator caller but am having some minor probs operating it on a solo hunt and still holding the bow with an arrow on the string (not impossible but a but clumsy).
Thanks
Aaron

great bit of footage there tommo.

Hey Thwack, I was using a Scotch Predator call too. I simply hold it in my bow hand while holding the bow and work it with the string hand. I find it easy to just drop it in preparation for a shot when a Fox comes in. I have a button whistle in my mouth too so if I have dropped the Scotch I can still call.
Anyway it works for me.
No doubt is is always easier when someone else is hunting with you with one calling and one shooting.

Thanks Tommo, that is basically how I am doing it at the moment - although it does feel kinda gumby - I would like to try one of those electronic remote callers, that would leave you hands and mouth free, and the focus of the fox would be on the noise source and not you which would make things easier at times. But its hard to beat the attracting power of the Scotch.
Thanks for your reply.
Managed another hunt last weekend and had plenty more Foxes come in, nine in fact.
Foxes coming out of bushes at my feet, from behind, turning up while looking in the wrong direction, me moving at the wrong time etc meant I only managed two shots, missing the first (by a whisker) and nailing the second.

Another good day out. This weekend coming will see another day on the Foxes which is on a property where mates and I have called in plenty before so despite the forecast snow showers it should be a good day.
Oh and Go the Widow!
Way to go Tommo. I have only managed to call them in early morning or just on sunset with the button whistle might have to try out the scotch predator. Best of luck this weekend.
Cheers
