I'm putting together a prototype that uses a small transmitter in the arrow shaft (~35gr) to send a signal to a handheld receiver. It tells you in which direction your arrow lay, be it in shot game or a missed target. Its good for a few hundred meters.

I'm interested in what you guys think of such a device, would you use one?

Hmmm...wonder how the trans will handle impact...if it works it might take off...im considering getting a cheapy metal detector ...i know roughly where my lost arrows are..but they are bellow grass level and hard to find....suppose if i actually hit my target it would be easier:P

Metal detectors are well worth the money in my opinion. I reckon mine saved me hundreds of dollars in arrows over the year. To bad it wasnt compact enough to take hunting.
Im all for your arrows Sagitarius. What I think would be cool is if it could be adapted to a GPS unit or a UHF as most people carry one or the other when they hunt.
How is the rangefinder still got it???;)

Yep...bluetooth it and make it talk to standard PDA software and you have a winner!

It would be cool Bill, I'm playing with the gps idea but the uhf wave is to broad to give a direction.

Yep still got it. ;)

Wow, awesome idea. I would definitely be up for it. Would the transmitter be thing enough to fit in an Eaton Protour or at least an Axis FMJ?

It depends if its Bluetooth or not. ;)

5 simple transmitters a reciever and batteries might cost about $100.

Hmmn, depends what parts I can find. Whats the internal diameter of the shaft?

The Axis is 5mm internal diameter, for the 8.9gr per inch, the heavier FMJs have a much bigger ID .

I haven't got the Protours yet, but given the cost of them this would be a realy good investment. I will find out and will let you know.

Sounds like a great idea.
Just have to watch out in Vic how the authorities interpretate the following reg,
"It is illegal to hunt
on or across roads or tracks and to use vehicles,
spotlights, two-way radios or electronic devices to hunt
or assist in the pursuit of game. Electronic equipment
may be used for safety purposes or to locate hounds
after a hunt has ceased (see “The use of tracking
collars” on page 24 of this Guide)"- taken from 2008 Hunting guide for game in Victoria.
Electronic device?
If you have not retrieved the animal technically the hunt has not ceased.
We all hope common sense prevails, but as we all know, "common" sense isn't to common these days.

Ok think it can be done. The largest component is Size: 3.81mm x 3.81mm x 2.79mm or this one
:P

Might have to make a few phone calls, I've heard that about hunting in other states as well. Thanks, will let you know what I find out.

Sounds like a handy thing for finding those lost arrows, but I think it is considered unethical to use devices like this to track game after the shot ,as well as being illegal for deerhunting in Vic.

if its small and lightweight enough i'd be keen. But what device would you use to locate it? do you need a special reciever or just a regular UHF? i noticed that turkey tracker thingy had a special dohicker (very scientific i know, lol)

Sagitarius

It would have a small receiver, about as big as a mobile phone.

do you not think that using whatever means neccesary to locate wounded/ shot animals would be more ethical than letting it die slowly or get eaten alive by predators? I think it is our duty as hunters to do as much as we can to loacte and dispatch any wounded animal as quickly as possible and if using arrow tracking or any other device i do not see that as unethical. Any other thoughts on this issue?
