I've read quite a bit about lost game and was wondering does anyone use dogs for tracking wounded game?personelly i've used jack russels to track and find sambar[bad rifle shot] this deer would have been left to rot other wise,as it went over some rock ground were it was imposible to track, anyway thanks for reading ,dazza.

Yes I do also but only after spending a lot of time and effort looking first, I shot a fox today but it went into some blackberries and bracken will go back with my Jack Russell tomorrow and recover.

I have a black lab and have used her with great success when hunting with a rifle but never used her when hunting with the bow.
I would rather someone use a dog to find downed game than see it rot in the bush.

I have seen good GSP's and GWP's in NZ where most hunting is in thick bush. The dogs are trained to stay at heel at all times while hunting they can be a bit noisey at times though. It surprises me that more bow hunters don't have dogs as game often travels further when shot with a bow compared to a rifle. I personally see no ethical downside to tracking wounded game with a dog.

What about honing your bush skills instead of using dogs,i have hunting dogs, but my dogging for pigs and bowhunting are never combined.each to there own,but for me,i recover lost animals using my own knowledge, isnt that what bowhunting is all about,to use your witts and bush skills to stalk shoot and recover an animal, the way it should be done.steve

If that what it takes to recover an animal, go for it. Better to recover than loose.......

A mate of mines takes his german wirehair pointer with him and it finds and tracks downed game really well.

I will be buying a Weimaraner for deer as soon as I own a house. They are a german dog bred for deer stalking.... Sweet.

Yes i agree steven,my bush skills told me it wouldbe easyer to drive 25 mins home and grab adog,i had tracked this deer 4 about 800m,gone through half a roll of dunny paper marking the trail, being the 26th of december you could imagine how hard the ground was, this deer [sambar] should have been on the deck at 5.50am[yes it was daylight].However 1/2'' twig unseen stuffed me up.
