Well our first European Bowhunting Safari has come to an end after 12 days at our Chital & Goat Properties...

I'm not going to write a whole story on the trip as there will be a couple of stories comig out over the coming months...so won't spoil them with too much detail....

Needless to say a good time was had by all and the clients had not been to Australia before so the experience was just that AN EXPERIENCE!!!!!

We travelled to our Chital Property at Charters Towers for some 4-5 days hunting and they were amazed at how easy the Chital were to find (Look out the back door), but they were in for a leason in frustration with many unsuccessful stalks, something they said was hard to come to terms with as they looked a little out of place with their hunting methods. After some useful tuition they were able to secure 1 Spiker & 2 Does...Very well done considered they where all taken by stalking and not from tree stands...They learnt quickly....

We then travelled to our Goat property 3 hours from Blackall for the remainder of the time....It was a stark contrast from going from the relative green to the desert with very little ground cover.....and the bloody Flies millions of them....luckily I had some head nets

The hunting was easier but also frustrating due to how noisy the ground was being so dry...They were also having a hard time with the heat coming from -10 to 34 c....But give them credit they soldiered on and keep up with us...they were as keen as mustard. Over the week we accounted for 11 Goats & 24 Hogs...2 T/C Goats and 1 T/c hog..
They had a hard time working out which goat to shoot and on a couple of occasions manged to shoot the wrong ones but they still had fun. Had some diffuculty in understanding everything but we were able to communicate successfully most of the time...

A lot was learn't by everybody including us we learn't about other countries hunting etc.

So here are a couple of pic's....

Good hunting everybody
Mick

Looks like they had a great time. You guys are a credit to our international relations.

The would certainly notice the effects of going from their winter to ours, but I wonder how the time travel was affecting them? is it some new method of controling jetlag.

Hey Mick, did you organise a 'return trip' to Finland to chase a reindeer?

Seriously though, what do these blokes hunt at home?

Mick.

First Jindy...Jetlag whats that they just wanted to hunt looked like crap the first day but they soldiered on....They hunt all over the world....

Oki offerred Steve & Me his Africian Safari due in 2 weeks, he had already paid for everything so we only needed airfares but we counldn't afford to take him up on the offer (Bugger)

They hunt Moose, Beaver & Roe Deer in Finland...

We learnt a lot about hunting in Europe....For example many countries do not allow Bowhunting and in Germany you can not hunt until you have done a full years hunting course and it is only for the rich as it holds a huge amount of prestigue.....

Mate this country is blessed compared to other countries.....

Yes Mick we are very lucky to have the hunting and the amount of game we have and largely take for granted. It's funny how a lot of us think that it is better overseas, while a lot of the overseas game is more exotic I would doubt that there would be any country where hunting was more accesable to the bloke on the street as it is in Australia...Glenn...

Hi bowhunters!

Regards from green and warm Finland!
I ought to have written earlier, but after our safari with Mick and Steve I had to work hard, had the EBA (European Bowhunting association) meeting (now 15 countries), Finnish BH Association meeting (president of FBA) and some CIC duties (International Counsil for Game and Wildlife Concervation). And I had to complete a few bowhunting articles too.
I wrote a 12 page article about our adventure in the Outback of Australia for "Maastossa" magazine (=Outdoors) and our Bowhunting magazine "J‰kk‰r‰".

Yes you are privileged there down under! You have easy access to great bowhunting adventures. We in Finland can only hunt small game, beaver and roedeer with the bow. Still we are doing better than most other European countries. Like Mick wrote in Germany all bowhunting is strictly forbidden and also in Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and so on. Luckily some big countries like France, Spain, Hungary etc. allow bowhunting, even big game.
First we were only alloved to hunt only small game. Then we got the beaver and roedeer in 2001. Now our autonnomous island ≈land legalized bowhunting (a few days ago) and here on the mainland we are waiting for the next step = all the deer (whitetail, fallow and forest reindeer). This, I believe, will happen in the near future. And the last step will be the moose and brown bear.

Like Mick wrote we (Yki, Manu and I) have been hunting all over the world for years. I started these international adventures in 1992 and have been making bowhunting trips 2-3 times per year since that. Many European countries, various African hunts, 4 times New Zealand, many US states, a few provinces of Canada, Alaska and now, finally, Australia. I'm 48 and started to bowhunt (seriously) at the age of 21 or 22.

Many times when I go bowhunting somewhere I can hunt only 1-2 species and there are restrictions concerning the number of animals allowed. In Africa one has to pay a trophy fee for each animal (may be expensive!) and in many places in Europe one has to pay the trophy fee by weight of the antlers or inches of the tusks etc. You can't believe how expensive a red stag may be in some countries! It may be worth a small new car!

You see, you are lucky! You can hunt year around, easy access, cheap, lots of animals and great bowfishing too!

Yes many a time it was frustrating to hunt those devil deer (chital), but finally we got 3 of them. And we saw hundreds of them every day!
Goats and pigs were also sometimes frustrating but every now and then we were lucky enough to shoot them. We took 38 game animals and all by staking. Sometimes the shooting distance was 12 meters and sometimes 48 meters. Now, after 12 days of hunting, we know much better how to operate there.
We are already planning the next TBA hunt. Well, in September I'll be bowhunting alligators and big fish in Florida and deer + turkey in Missouri later in October - November. But then it's time to hit the chital property and the Cape York!!
In the meantime some other Finns and Europeans will try their luck and stealth in the Outback.

Thank you Mick and Steve for a great adventure and good frienship!

Juha Kylm‰, Finland
