With the chill of winter here and an empty freezer. A good friend of mine asked me out to his property to give him a hand to knock over one of his steers. He told me we would get time for a hunt so throw your bow in. I wasn't very prepared with only two arrows fletched up ( I thought I had more made up live and learn).
We arrived about 9am. Unpacked the gear and wasn't long before we were walking over to a known soak. We set up and started with a whistle. A couple of rabbits came to the fake cry but no foxs. Moving on and the first bit of action started with a mob of small pigs up on the opposite hill moving in and out of cover catching the morning sun.

The wind was behind us we decided to slip down and come up the gully behind them over and down onto them. As we started our stalk around the bend was a mob of goats with a couple of billys with them. The pigs looked settled so we gave goats a go. With a wind swirl they were off. Back to the pigs. Not just yet a young billy jumped up next to us at 20m (must have been asleep) he jumps and has a little run and stops at 30m. Shoot him shoot him. Off goes the arrow 30m run and he was on the ground. He also snapped my arrow and now only had one

The unlucky billy. Plenty of pig rubbing on the trees and mud check the tree on the right.
I dont think he will last long with an eagles nest above where we left him.

10min later and we could hear the hogs grunting and snorting 20m over the ridge a little further and we could see them at 15m I had a perfect opportunity on a boar but the strap on my backpack was caught in the string. By the time I got it out and came to full draw the boar had spotted my and ran. I took a running shot I pulled it ahead of him a bit to much and hit him in the neck. The next hour was frustrating following a good blood trail through thick tea tree. After a good 500 m he was recovered.

Back for a feed and then off to find the steer. On the way out we saw a good boar near a dam he had to wait as we had a job to do.
It took a bit to find and get him under a good tree. This was the first time we had done this with out an experienced person. It went well with a few lessons learnt for next time.

We left him over night and planned to quarter him up and hang him in a mates cool room sunday.
Back to the shack and a mob of goats was across the hill. But after a few beers my stalking wasnt that great.

A few more beers and a good feed and i was out.
The next morning was cold with a good frost. The plan was to head over to the dam in hope of seeing that boar from the day before. In the distance we saw a boar moving in and out of the blackberry he saw us a long way off or winded us either way he did the bolt.
We kept walking and it wasnt until jacko looked back that we saw we had just walked past a good boar and sow. He was chasing her around then gave up and laid down next to a log in the early morning sun. i stalked in to 15m of the pig but he was head on i had to move right around to get the right shoot angle i was in the open with no cover. Eyes closed so i kept going. Im almost around and that sow comes back spots me and starts to grunt and takes off. The big fella doesnt even open his eyes i start to get confident the this was going to happen just then his eyes open and he jumps to his feet i came to full draw and he runs. I stayed still and to my surprise he came back to see what i was big mistake as he turns to run the arrow hits him quartering away and he runs over the hill with my last arrow. We found him in the next gully in a bad way he couldnt run although still had a lot of go in him. We didnt have the time to let him expire as was still had a big day with the steer.
I decided to give him a go with a knife which turned out to be a bit wild and we got some funny footage.
