Lets take Howies thread a bit further.
Has anyone out there made their own broadheads.
How would you go about that.
Is it legal or ethical.
What materials would you use.
Any ideas out there

leave it to the pros... you would make it out of really high carbon steel but each b/head has to be spin tested for accuracy

Why would you bother to make them, lets weigh it up. To make broadhead you will need drawings plus materials plus tools plus time. Then there are the rejects and prototypes then the finished product then you are not happy with it so you tweak it and shoot it and Blah Blah Blah or you can work for a day make a grand and spend the other day hunting with your $3.00 tuskers or whatever you like. Lets see last saturday we went out and saw 20 pigs some buff and scrubbies and a cat No bugger that I will spend that time in the shed with a grinder? Mmm seems like a tough choice.. maybe some people will see some value in it but I dont think its a great idea especially with some great gear on the market.
Patbowtech, mate, if you've ever made your own heads, then show us some pics of the game you've taken with them :) Love to see some pics :)
I guess it's like making your own bows or arrows really.
Kim posted some great pics of some knapped heads the other day :D
I'm sure Woody started somewhere with his heads too - he'd be the man to be asking :)

I think I confused some of you out there, with my thread.
I am not suggesting one should attempt to make ones own broadheads as a
commercial alternative.
Just some little pet project to pass away the long winter nights.
Hell I am going to give it a go.
I started making them with long broadhead adaptors for the ferrule.
Blade shapes were drawn on spring steel strip and cut by a 5 inch angle grinder with thin cut off discs.
A power hack saw blade and steady hand and eye to cut the side slots and nose slot in the ferrule.
Old carpenters hand saws from trash and treasure would be a good source for blade steel.
A small roll pin through the nose of the ferrule and blade to fix it together.
A bench grinder, a 5" angle grinder, vice, power hack saw blade, and drill press would be required for the project.
Wear safety goggles for all grinding work.
Its a lot of fun, but tedious finicky work. A small digital grain scale for checking finished weight, would also be handy.
What would be the best way to grind the single bevel cutting edge prior to sharpening if you were going to do quite a few? Bearing in mind you want it accurate...
So clemo are you going to walk to your hunting spots??????????
Why do some fisherman make their own lures, flies, rods?
Why do some bow hunters make their own bows, arrows, strings, fletches, clothes?
Why do you hunt with a bow? wouldnt it be easier with a gun?
If its only about the end result then why dont we all just take the easiest path.

Howie, I bought a bench grinder with a geared down wet stone tool sharpening wheel on one end, $100 from Bunnings.
I made a tool post and clamp to place the broad heads in (got sick if slicing my fingers open), I can sharpen 20 black stumps to a feather edge, single or double bevel in about 15 min and finish them off with a steel for a shave sharp edge.
The tool post caused some head scratching and it’s made to fit the black stump vented only but it gives a perfect bevel.

I have one of those grinders and wouldn't mind seeing how you have set it up
Will get some picks posted

Spend $40 to $50 thousand dollars on a custom surface grinding machine..........
For Howie and Jindy.
The tool clamp peice of theis thing is an old tool clamp of a linishing belt, it has been extensively modified for use on the black stumps.
The stand is just some angle and flat plate.
Ill let the pictures do the talking.
