So which one does more damage to the enviroment and our natives? what i can think of is they both kill native animals but foxes also kill alot of lambs and other stock. they dont really cause erosion so i cant decide on which species is more of a pest.

let me hear your thoughts on this.

dan.

Cats, foxes cant climb trees. Also there are extremely few animals that kill for fun on this planet and cats are one of them. they also have I think the third or fourth highest breeding rate of all the mammals and only rarely eat carrion preferring fresh kills. They can also live in northern areas with dingos, foxes simply cannot. We get heaps up here but only rarely see them but you can see where they have been. They are without doubt possibly the worst animal bought into this country but some people love them. I rate them as hard as anything to shoot that i have come across.

cats are close to the top on my hit list and will stay that way after i have killed a thousand we have a few on our place but there so sneaky and i can rarely get a shot but after this reading i am eaven more enthusiastic than ever about killing those bastards... i heard somewhere that foxes are related to the cat family? should i believe this?

Hey David, why don't you try putting all the rabbit bits you don't use when you get a rabbit (like heads, feet, guts etc.) into a sort of a cage, only has to be small chicken wire box or basket. Then with some more wire and a tent peg secure your little bait pile to the ground. You will then have something to focus your hunts on in hope of getting one of those elusive cats on your place. The one and only cat I have ever shot with the bow was located feasting on a pile of leftover bits and pieces from a pro roo shooter. Sort of like a bait pile that I did not have to set up.

You can also get feral cat to respond to a fox whistle on occasion - we had one come into the Tenterfield Whistle just on the weekend, he was missed from 15 meters, but that's another story.

I hate cats - ive never managed to shoot one with a rifle or a bow tho ive trapped a lot. But foxes do more damage in terms of total impact on small native wildlife. Look at Tassie that has no foxes but heaps of cats. They still have almost all of the native small marsupials that are pretty much gone from the mainland where the foxes live.
ive been told that foxes havent established in tassie because the devils get in their burrows and eat the young foxes. Good to see that the natives have a win in some situations!!

Cats are not related to foxes. The Domestic Cat (Felis catus) belongs to the Felidae family whilst the European Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) belongs to the Canidae Family. The nearest similarity is that they belong to the Order: Carnivora.

In my opinion both are bad and I couldn't quantify which is worst than the other.

I wrote a huge post explaining the exact taxonomy of both species and the damage done but when I posted it only part of it came up and the formatting went AWOL?

Cheers,
