View Full Version : Glenlyon Dam
Hi all
Im heading down to the Tenterfield-Stanthorpe area at the end of the year to do a bit of fishing and hunting on the Mole River and Glenlyon dam area. Does anyone have any experience in this area, and could tell me what game I would expect to find, My mate has access to a property and we are hoping to find a Fox or two and maybe get into some Goats and just wondering what other options are availabe. Cod are hopefully on the cards. Coming from North Queensland Im not sure what to expect as this is going to be a bit diferent to the Pigs and Chital that I have been hunting so any hints would be appreciated. Thanks
Rod
You should find goats, a fair chance of mountain boars and maybe a fallow.
Packing your fox whistle is not a bad idea either ;)
cheers,

Goats and Fallow are definitely on the cards Bowfly. If you are anywhere NEAR (not in of course) Sundown National Park (between Sundown and Glenlyon is real good), you WILL find Fallow. As Luke said you may run into a pig or two with a better than average chance at a nice fox or two.
On the fishing front, you will encounter the noxious European carp (pity we cannot bowfish for them), and also the Murray Cod and Yellowbelly (Golden Perch). Eel Tailed Catfish are also in abundance. So bring some or your barra lures to entice the Cod and something a bit smaller for the Yellowbelly.
Bring your camera as you will be in some very rugged and very beautiful country, be prepared to walk up LOTS of hills.
Thanks guys
Besides the "rut" as I know this is already over, what is a good time to head down that way.. For example, good fox pelts.. without freezing our buts off.
Thanks again

Bowfly, all the foxes I have seen come to a call in the last three weeks (about a dozen), have been in 100% health and pelts are full and glossy. They will of course be paring up in a month or two (I believe they have already started early in some parts down south) and will tend to ignore the call. Although you will sometimes fool a dog with a vixen call (see Tenterfield Whistle website - 3 short blasts repeated in succession).
It has been almost five years since the areas close to Stanthorpe have seen a strong bout of mange and there are a few about. Its very cold here now but by the time you come at the end of the year things will have heated up well and truly and those foxes will be coming in to the call again, along with a few pups.
Goats will be on the go year round, most pigs I know of seem to be very transient and nocturnal, so pinning them down is usually difficult.
Anyway mate, that's my basic perspective on the Stanthorpe area (you could try Scott perhaps, for a bit of a rundown more on the Tenterfield side of things), hope that helps. Let me know if you need more and I will try to help.
