View Full Version : Holiday goats
A few weeks ago i was invited to hunt goats with a mate (Glenn) and his dad (Doug). After all the necesary packing we left around 10:30 am on friday morning and arrived at the shearing quarters around 11:00 that night and hit the sack after unpacking.

We woke bright and early saturday morning (10:30) and after shovelling down breaky we went to see if we couldn't find some goaties.
We could see them still sunning themselvs on the side of the hills so decided to check for pigs at the dam, we found plenty of sign but no pigs. The rest of the day was pretty uneventful except for a few blown stalks. Sunday we scouted one of the hills following a mob of bout 60 goats we got to the top of the hill but the goats doubled around behind us and started walking straight at us we each found a spot to hide and waited for them to come to us. They were upon us within minutes and Glenn and I both had one picked out. My heart was thumping as i pulled back on my first billy he was slowly walking broadside towards me at about 25m i let go and hit him a bit low but still managed to get the bottom of his lungs, the arrow passed straight through and the billy didn't no what hit him. Only 5 seconds later Glenn let go on another billy which had walked in front of mine the arrow hit him perfect and he spooked and took half the mob down the hill with him. The other half of the mob didn't no what was going on and kept feeding, I heard something crashing through the trees on my right i turned to see a nanny running full pelt at me:o with 3 billys in hot pursuit she was so close to me i could of counted the grey hairs on her brown nose before she turned and ran behind me. I heard a Whack and Glenn had nailed one of the billys he only went 10m before laying down. After that the rest of mob moved back down the hill.

We Went and found my goat which was laying under a tree half way down the hill. This was my first Billy even though he was no monster i will definitely remember him.

After that we went in search of Glenns other billy but were unsuccesful in finding him which was a shame. Later on that day i also shot another billy while walking around the side of the cliff which had only 1 horn the other was broken off infected and rotten.

We also seen a mob of 10 pigs at one of the dams later that day but missed shots on them.
Monday we went to have a look at one of the dams and when we got there we were welcomed with that unmistakeable smell of billy and around 200 goats just spread over the whole valley. Doug followed up a nice black brown billy as soon as we arrived and easily nailed him through both lungs.

Thanks Macka we did see a couple a little bigger but the property doesn't normally produce any biggens not like way out west or down south does
