the end of school holidays and my young fella ,tom ,wanted to go
chase some fallow and foxes with the bow's .
we set up camp at the shack and headed off to see what we could find.
an old apple tree grows in a pine forest and i put tom out front and commenced squarking with the preditor caller.
in no time mr fox came trotting down the track ,tom was behind a small blackberry bush and drew as the fox looked
down the gully ,he released at about 20 meters and unfortunalty went thru a small bush and his arrow deflected slightly to scare the pants of mr fox who scampered off ,figuring an armed 9 year old is to scaredy this early in the morning ,
one busted broad head for our first effort

we continued on,calling in 3 more only to be busted by the wind
coming across some fallow deer sign and having the wind right we crossed a creek and climbed a hill in the pines,
tough work but fun ,

topping out in the head of a gully we discovered fresh droppings and a rub made that morning .
With the wind pulling up the gully we slowly decended ,we made it half way down when i noticed a fallow alseep not 70 meters to our left ,we sat and watched finding another 4 ,all asleep .
we had been in this possition for about 40 minutes when i spotted a fallow spiker picking its way towards us in the right hand gully ,i tapped tommy on the sholder but he was on the ball already knocking an arrow .
when ready i doe called 'MEEP".....imediatley the fallow headed straight for us ,i was sitting right behind tom and told him to raise in to a kneeling possition and to wait ,wait ,wait ,.....ok now draw i whisperd
the deer pranced up the small rize and would have gone straight past but i let out the softest meep i could and he stopped ....right with his vitals and head behind two of the biggest pine trees on the ridge at a later measured 26 yards ......ahhhhhhh.....bugger,
he worked out his mistake and did the impressive fallow prance out of there towards the girls who were still asleep to our left ..
they all go a bit spooky after that and left the area heading up the hill ,
while the spiker was pranceing away i made 3 doe calls.and we than spotted a group of 5 more heading up the gully vertually on the same path as the spiker ,
i got tom to head dow hill and over the fallen pine in front of us and set him self up again and not to draw untill he was sure they were not looking at him .this group was now 70 meters out and still heading our way ,there was a small scrappy stag and a spiker in the group .
while this was happening we heard an animal heading down the right hand ridge towards the group of fallow ,i signaled tom who was already switched on to the noise ,i was looking at him when his eyes bulged ,he nodded in the direction of the noise and swiveling to look a great fallow stag with big wide palms trotted down thru the pines and stopped in the gully 65 meters to our right .
how big ,?you ask ?
wel the fallow i took with the bow when hunting a while ago with jindy and xt was 186 douglas points and this was way bigger than that ,at a guess id put him in the low 200's
i gave tom a thumbs up and he nodded ,by this stage dad was starting to shake ,tommy by the way was rock solid,,
,i gave a low "meep " and imediatley the stag dropped his head and came at a fast trot straight towards tommy who was standing his ground .
mentaly i was willing him to draw as the stag made his way thru the fallen timber .
but as it turned out i couldnt see that the stag was looking at /thru tom the whole time and tom thought if he drew the stag would see him ,
it came up out of the gully and i mouthed a low grunt and he stopped looking in my direction ,,,,DRAW NOW.........
tommmy drew and was settling in with his 20meter pin ,when was spotted and the stag bolted ,

ahhhhhh
i was trying to get the camera out of the pocket as the big fella stopped at 70 meters to try shoot him with the camera but was shaking to much to do any thing and lay down on the ground and tryed to regain some breath that i had not had for the last few minutes ....
WOW ,HOW COOL WAS THAT SON

he came back over the fallen tree and we sat down and talked it out , what had just transpired over the last 15 odd minutes ,i got him to go back to where he drew from and took this picture ,

he then ranged to where the stag was and it was 21 yards

we made our way slowly to the cabin yacking the whoe way how cool the experince
was .No we didnt shoot any thing but its these kind of days when in the bush with your boy

good stuff fellas.
i just came back from a hunt with my mates and found out i need to take a bit more time on the target. missed 2 sambar. the main cause is that i wasn't judging my distances well enough. 5 metres out is all it takes. Anyway, theres always next time
