Went out for a walk this afternoon and spotted this hind bedded and chewing her cud, took some pics although a bit far away and some video of her chewing, galssed all around to look for others then stalked in above her and got into some dead timber, while getting set up I got blasted by her calf in the tee tree on the left of her in the pic.

You have been so close so many times mate, I reckon this year you get your stag and I wish you all the best. Just got volume two from Errol, very passionate man when it comes to sambar hunting

Ozzyshane, in the bottom left hand corner of the picture is the head of a timbered gully, I was following fresh stag, hind and yearling prints up the gully when I spotted her out in the open, I am guessing she was out there due to the gusting winds which were blowing from her into the gully head so I was betting there was a stag bedded in there ( so he could keep tabs on her through scent) as that's where the pic of the Velvet stag was taken as he beds in there.
I didn't want to go in there and disturb him ( if he was there) as I want him to be relaxed when in this area. I positioned myself above the hind and what I thought was back enough
so I could watch her without my scent blowing into the gully.
But got busted by her yearling.

cheers

just a novice question for someone to answer... why are some male deer called stags and others are called bucks?? white tails are called bucks but reds are called stags is this just that some breeds are called stags and some are called bucks??

BTW nice looking animal

From what i remember Fallow are Bucks and Does, but the other species that are introduced into Australia are all stags and hinds. That is just what comes out of the fog at the back of my head though, i could be wrong.

Puk

P.S. I don't know why. American v European naming systems?
