I was wondering if anyone sees native animals when hunting.

When I hunted in the '60s I would see the occasional native animal on sunrise.

By the early '70s I was seeing more and more cats and Foxes and less and less native species.

Now I will see the occasional Echidna but none of the other small native species.

Because of this if I see a Cat, Fox or Dog in the bush in my kill zone, no matter what I am hunting, they are the first to feel my B/heads.

Seen too much damage to the native population from these introduced predators to leave them to their destruction.

Aside from the usuals, such as kangaroo's,wallabies and wallaroos i see quite a few wombats (a fair few suffering from mange  ) and like u said Echidnas aswell, but a far as bandicoots and the smaller marsupials i cant remember the last living one ive seen, would be years ago.

A pretty sad indication of the roles that foxes and cats play in our bush.

i was realy lucky a few years ago and stalked in on a male lyre bird absolutely going off. Had his 'lyre' all up and shimmering over his head and was going through his collection of bird calls. It was truly amazing. I sat there for about 5 minutes watching him (10 meters away) then for some reason he lifted his head, looked right into my eyes and was off like a rocket. I will never forget the experience

Cheers, Cam

p.s. Unfortunatley lyre birds too have been hit hard by these feral menaces

i have hunted in west qld for 10 or so years and the last couple ther has been some big 10/80 poisoning campaigns. The last time i was out there we saw plains turkeys and the owner said it was the first time since he was a kid he had seen good numbers of them. Also starting to appear were brolgas in the boar drains. There is still a few cats as 10/80 does not work on them apperently but we have not seen a fox for a long time.

Yeh see plenty of native wildlife around the top end while hunting wallabies, bandicoots, quolls(native cats) many different monitors, ssnakes and smaller reptiles not to mention the salt and fresh water crocs. I think that natives are a lot more shy than ferals so seeing more natives may be a good indication of how quet you are in the bush.

If dingoes are native why can we shoot them, First introduces species is it not. :?:

From what ive read, seen and heard the dingo was (one of) the first introduced species into oz (from asia) It is apparently responsible for the extinction of the thylacine (tassie tiger) from the mainland.

Cheers , Cam

Since taking up bowhunting I have had some cool experiences in the bush with native animals.

Just before christmas I was following a little creek in the mountains on a hot day and saw some movement ahead so sat down for a recce. They were water dragons. There was a male with a bright red neck frill and 4 females all dancing round courting. I watched them for about 15 minutes before a wallaby scared them into the rocks on the edge of the creek.

That was a first for me. Going slow and quiet the bush is a totally different place.

I have seen echidnas, lizards, owls, roo's, wombats a variety of native parrots and hawks/eagals while out hunting.
The owl I had him flying not even 15 feet directly over my head circling me it was a real buzz.
