G,day, i was wondering if somebody could give me the run down on how to score a feral cat, I hav a rough idea the measurement is taken from the skull but which way do i go about it. Any light on the situation would greatly appreciated.
G'day CS, welcome aboard mate!
Here's the run down on foxes, which, I believe is the same method used for cats.
Hope it's of some help mate.
Use a set of Vernier Callipers (a tape measure would be ok for a rough-ish measure), measure in inches and 16ths of an inch.
Measure the longest point of the dried clean skull from the front of top teeth to the back of skull (Lenght) add that to the widest measurement you can make, usually the eye sockets (Width) and add that to the distance between and at the very base of the incisor teeth to get your total score.
Always round up to the nearest 16th (ie. if the length is a bit over 5 inches and 10/16ths the length measurement is 5 11/16 and always measure at right angles to the longest and widest points.
Trophy class starts at 9 3/16.

Trophy for a cat is 7 and record is 7 10/16

Ok what is the general/required lenght of time berfore measuring? What if one is measuring ones cat skulls after a couple of years? Dose one add any given amount to get a more precise measurement?
Hi Gnome,
As a general rule you need to wait until the trophy has had time to dry (general 2-3weeks), I would have thought that once it was dry that the size wouldn't change. I could be wrong.
I have one at home that is over 12 months old which I can measure again to see if it has changed.
Cheers Tim

Thanks Tim,
Would be appreciated muchly.
Gnome,
I just ducked across the road and checked the measurements and the score was the same 7 2/16 that it was in Feb 07. I haven't got anything that is older then that to check.

Yep that sure is infact that would place it equal 17th on the trophy takers records page, as for my biggest 7 1/2 or 7 16/16 would place me at no: 5 on the records. as for the biggest recorded that belongs to none other than Jeff Challacombe
