just a random question i was thinking about last night... if a bow is designed with a cable slide then (if you could) can you put a roller guard on it or isn't it designed to have the cables stay in the one spot while the bow is drawn?
thanks dave

i just thought if the glide bar it only held in there by the two grub screws then there would be a lot of weight on those two grub screws and when you have a cable slide your cables come back but with a roller guard the stay in the one spot so i thought you might not be able to do it...? but i don't have a clue

Beautiful bow sir.
My first bow 20 some odd years ago looked alot like that. Bear Kodiak or Whitetail I think it was.
You need to put it on the wall.
As far as Iam concerned the older bows look great hanging on the wall.
It is a bit of history...

Timeless classic there special :D
I have an sl50 in the shed, bought way back in the (early) 80's. Started life as a 35gl but updated the limbs after an accident :( That Darton was my first compound and holds a lot of memories for me :)

mate it look like a bit of history... how many pounds is it... back in the day when they made the limbs out of wood did they get much power out of them or where the all around the 40-50lbs? how many bows have you had since that one lol... i pulled out my first bow the other day (not that i can brag like you cos mine is only 4 years old) its like 5 to 15 pounds but i lent it to a young friend of mine who wants to get into archery/bowhunting i really hope he sticks with it

At one point in time the Darton 45k and SL50 M were very popular, a lot of ferals have bit the dust with them.

To the original question, I believe a stationary roller instead of a sliding cable slide, would alter your force draw curve radically.

You would have less let off and maybe a higher peak weight.

Some bows have this as a design feature, but I would think doing this to a guard rod that screws in or is fixed with grub screws would be inviting failure of the cable guard rod.

Personally its not something I would play with, but its your bow.

Just ask yourself, can I afford to replace it if things go wrong.

yeah good point woody the bar on hoyts is carbon fiber so i don't want to think what would happen it if it had 60lbs or what ever pulling it the wrong way and yeah when i asked the question thats what i was mainly getting at that i think you might need longer cables or something...?

We had a guy at our club who use to machine all sorts of different things for his bow, some were very good and others...ehh.
He designed and put a roller guard on his old Mathews which originally came with a cable slide. He ended up with more poundage and a longer draw on his bow and he couldn't understand why:eek:. I explained to him if you want to lengthen your draw you can either take twists out of the string or put more twists in the cables. By putting on a roller guard he was shortening the cables because the guard was holding the cables in the one position rather than let them slide along the guard. Thus more poundage and longer draw, he tried making different string and cable set for it but with no success. Bottom line the bow manufacturers invest a lot of time and money in their bows they know better than most so I tend to leave them as designed.:P

David, why do you need to get a new bow each year, it takes time to brake in a bow and the accessories that are attched to the bow, and all you seem to hunt are rabbits,:P no bigger game

DavidJHardy
22-07-08, 09:50 PM
the only reason i am thinking about getting a new bow is cos when i got my one i couldn't pull more then 50lbs... so i got a 40-50lbs bow and now i can pull 60lbs so i am looking at either getting new limbs (60-70lbs) or a new bow on 60-70lbs i am not sure if i will get a new bow yet but i am just looking around and new limbs for hoyt aren't cheap (i don't know how much they would be but i am guessing around $400 plus...?) so i just thought i could spend a heap of money on new limbs or spend a little bit more and get a better bow but like it has been said... its all greek to me... and if i do another bow it wont be for another 6-8 months so i don't have to decide till then... and i have only been shooting rabbits but thats only cos i didn't have property access but i just got one for goats so i will be hunting them soon... hope that makes sence

50lbs is is more than adequate for goats.:) My young bloke shot his first billy with a 32lb Bowtech Blackhawk with a 23" draw he was ten. How old are you by the way? You don't want to pull to much poundage if you are still growing you might do some long term damage.

i am almost 16 y/o... so yeah still growing and my bow is maxed out on 54lbs. i have heard of that damage and don't want anything to happen. it wont be until about 6-8 months before i start pulling 60-70lbs... do you think that will be ok?
thanks dave

A bow performs at its best at its maximum draw weight(bolts fully in)...I personaly wouldnt replace until 54lb is getting way easy....at target, where i shoot a lot of arrows i only use 56lb or lower...and im way bigger than you Dave...but hunting where i only shoot occasionaly(if at all) i will go higher....54lb will handle everything your after for some time to come IMO...

My son is now 14 but he is 84kg and shoots about 700arrows per week and can pull a 60lb bow but I wont let him shoot any more then 52lbs. Its an individual thing and from your photo there does not seem to be much of you so I would carefully consider whether you really need 70lbs. My mate Bob is a great guy and he is an older gentlemen and he drops pigs, pass through, with a 56lb bow. Don't get sucked into the I pull more poundage than you B/S.

David- listen to the advice you asked for, mate. Many of us here have been 16 with your enthusiasm about gear- I admit half the fun is in playing around with it. BUT- There is absolutely nothing wrong with the set-up you have, its top-quality gear. Consistent accuracy is what your goal should always be. If there is something in your rig that is hindering your accuracy, then it is time to look at mods and replacements. Until then, practise, practise, practise. And very good luck to you.
