View Full Version : 50 metre shot??
How many people have their bow sighted in for 50m? How many people would have a shot at an animal at 50m or plus? Also do you shot your bow with both eyes open or one eye closed?

Yep my last pin is sighted to 50m. I use it for ABA shoots, given how I have gone, I would NEVER use it on game ;)

i have mine to 40 meters. also use it for targets and would rather not shoot out that far. 30 i like to be within 30 meters. but with more practice maybe.

ha i shot at a 50m target and put it up like a metre above the target and i hit the ground and bounced up and hit the A zone
i've got my last pin set on 50m its really only used for practice i would probably never use it for shooting game, i shoot with one eye closed

I give em a chance and close both;)
Mine is 80 yards for target but like to get within 40m when hunting
My last pin is set for 50m but I only used it for when I didn’t have a target sight. When im hunting I shoot two eyes open but for target I shoot one eye open

i have my last pin at 50m and have shot rabbits and deer right out to 50m is all about practice before you go out in the field i shoot at 50 at the target all the time so i know i can make my shot count but that being said if i can get closer i will.

Last pin was set at 70m, both eyes open depends and yes depending on what I am shooting at.
I have my pins set out to 60m and depending on the animal i will usually try and get inside 40m but have taken 50m shots. I have my 60m pin for backup when i might need it for a wounded animal.

I don't think I'd be to keen on taking a deer at 50m+ you always wanna make sure you get the most penetration for the most humane kill, that's just my thoughts anyway. I shoot with one eye closed ;)but it's all personal preference.
I use eyes open and I have my last pin at 50 meters. I would use it on a quartering away shot as I practice a lot at that distance and feel confident doing so.
I would also use it for wounded game.
It is my 'agressive' pin, however most of my shots are under 25 meters.

my last pin is at 40m, had 5 pins so i could shoot out to 50m but took it out so i wouldn't shoot over 40m i shot a goat at about 60-70m angling away and it only made it about 20m with a nice 1 arrow kill. i dont like shooting past 20-30m but will shoot at goats out to 40m.

It seems you can set your last pin on 100 and get a range finder and go for it..shouldnt be too hard..

I use a slide sight, tape goes to 120yds. but I usually practice at 50yds.

My new sight coming..sword apex miro 3rd plane 5 pin will be set from 10m to 50m...prefer to be within 30m when possible...i shoot lefthanded and im right eye dominant..so i have to close one eye..

i have both eyes open (same with a gun) so i can see more
I have a 50 metre pin, and the reason i have a 50 metre pin is so i can take shots out to 50 metres. With plenty of practice you will get more confidence to take longer shots if you need to.

the way i see it is, bowhunting is about getting in CLOSE. i would be so much more proud of myself if i shot a billy from 10m then i would if i shot it from 50+m. like i said before, i shot that goat from 60-70m but i was hardly proud of myself, i felt more sad then happy and now that i think of it, i wish i never released that arrow.

I have my pins set from 20-60mtrs but will only shoot to 50.
My range at home goes to 50mtrs and I practice regularly at that distance.
Final setup for any of my equipment is always how the gear shoots at 50mtrs.
Decisions on when to take a shot on game are always dependant on the terrain and your abilities.
If you are not extremely confident in your abilities at any distance don't take the shot.
Most of my kills are within 20mtrs but when you have a relaxed animal grazing in the open and plenty of time to set yourself for the shot, I will always take the 50mtr shot.
If there is any doubt in the situation, I won't take the shot.
Both eyes open under 40mtrs, one eye 40-50.

Ive seen your group at 50m Warlocke..sweet!
pins set from 20 to 60 yards, practicing at 40 and 60 yards makes those 20 to 30 yard hunting shots alot easier. i have shot game at longer distances but the thrill is shooting them under 20 yards. i think everyone should practice at 50 and 60 yards/metres, it improves your form out of sight. IMO
Have been shooting with one eye closed lately and it seems to make the fibre optic pin brighter,

When I was shooting Compounds I had my pins set out to 50m and regulary practised at that distance. If I couldnt get any closer then 50m and the conditions were right I would take the shot. I started with one eye open then went to both open which seemed to give me a better sight picture.

i shoot both eyes open and have a 5 pin sight and have the pins set up for 20 30 40 50 and 60m
i practise at 60m as much as i would from 20m and in still conditions would feel confident on taking a shot at a deer from 60m but i would only shoot from long distances if it was my last resort and i had no chance of getting closer.......i have takin rabbits at 50m and a fallow deer at 45m but never had to use the 60m pin yet

I've just come in from my range where I was practising at 60m; that's as far as I can get my pins set- 20m pin is all the way at the top of the sight and I had to file the butt of the bottom pin to get it low enough to shoot 60 (using the Sword Acu-site with the bar extended out so I can get the best focus on the pin with my old eyes). Biggest worry to me shooting at 60m is not accuracy but penetration (sambar hunting), also the animal has time to move quite a bit. I've had rabbits dodge the arrow at 15m.

took a couple of 50m shots at rabbits today, one lost a bit of fur and rolled down the burrow it was sitting in and the other got a facefull of dirt
50% result... cant complain i guess
i think 50m is realy pushing it for small game
i shoot with both eyes open, a left over habbit from shotgunning i think
