strangest place i ever saw deer was at a beach... walking along the sand, look up at a little grassy spot with a paicknick table about 20m away and theres two fallow deer looking at me... after they bolted i found more tracks and skat around the place but couldnt find them again... didnt think deer liked beaches...?

Not a deer story but a close up with daisy the cow.
A few years ago I was heading up to a traditional shoot and it was a dark night, been behind the wheel for several hours and there was a car several hundred yards in front of me. I can recall that the tail lights veered to the left slightly, thinking they swerved to miss a pot hole. Seconds later I see this cow head appear out of the dark, instinctively I grab the steering wheel and brace myself for the impact. Everything goes into slow motion, I didn't even have time to hit the breaks. The cow was almost totally black in colour and facing across the road from right to left. Puckor Factor has gone thru the roof at this stage. I reckon I miss her by millimetres, but after checking the right mirror for spoor and snot, there must of been at least 6 inches clearance. Thats the smallest 6 inches I've ever seen......................
I pass the cow and then realise what has just occurred and then the thoughts of what would could of happened. I was probaly doing 100 km/h or so, hitting a cow doing that speed would of caused alot of damage and even death.
I was shaken up and smoked a thousand cigarettes b4 arriving at the shoot.
That was the closest I have come to a major bingle with an animal.

Hope you dont mean happy hunting at night with the spot light. To me thats against everything that bow hunting stands for. The idea of bow hunting is to get as close as possible to your quarry, without the use of an artificial light.

I think he meant he's got spot lights so he can see em before he hits em.....as for Howie..you a lucky boy..often cows, deer, horses and even sometimes roo's will come back thru the windscreen and crush you to the seat...had a call out with the firies the other night on the freeway..young chick hit a roo mid jump..she was pinned and serious...

We have a spot near home that you have to watch for roos and deer.
Only do 40k's through there.Fresh road kill there every 2-3 days.
Seen a massive buck a couple of times that i would never want to hit but deer are normally seen around april and may only.Seem to move down from the national park.
Maybe rutting season????? but not sure as im not up to speed with deer.

One of my mates back home in NZ borrowed my old restored triumph and hit a horse at speed in the para paras. Pretty much turned the car in to a convertible. The only thing that saved him was that he wasn't wearing a seat belt so when the horse came running out he lay down on to the passenger side and the horse went over him. Damn lucky! Shame about the car though... :( I used to take my old RX2 out for a thrash sometimes down some of the forest roads around Taupo and Rotorua and twice I've had deer coming running out of the bush and jump clear over the car. You'd think a 12A screaming it's head off through a super trap exhaust would send them running for the hills but it was like a magnet! That must be where I'm going wrong hunting them... I'm being to damn quiet! :D

I cleaned up a fallow doe early one morning in a work truck doing about 100. It was a good clean kill:D but the work truck was a bit worse for wear.:(
