yeah that right - Another Bloody Camel!!
We went out for a day trip on monday - Bert and I. It was great weather for it, nice and cool but at this time of year not much happening on the camel front. The buggers love the hot weather but there are almost none to be seen closer to town in the cooler months. We drove around for the day and only saw 8. Also saw loads of brumbies as always and about 20 or 30 donkeys.
Anyways Bert is a pretty experienced bowhunter but still hasnt shot a camel so for the 2nd time running I've tried to help him out and get him in position to put one on the ground. After all the driving around we spot some, we drive past. pull up about 1km up the road and walk back. To cut a long story short he misses a shot at one!! bloody hell
So back in the car and just a little further up there are another mob. We decide to try for an ambush.. They are all in a gully so its pretty easy for him to get up ahead then i walk in so they see me at long range and just move off slowly. Again to cut a long story short he gets a shot but misses.. lol and this fella outshoots me on an ABA round every time.
Actually i think its kinda funny cause i know how that "first of species" jinx works - you just need to get that first one down and it all seems to get easier.
anyway they trot off so we repeat the attempt - Bert zooms off in the car, gets round a long way in front and hides nicely. I follow up slowly but somehow they still spot him and pull up about 70m out from where he is hiding. I come up slowly from behind and get in to about 60m before they spot me and make a move off away around Bert just out of bow range.
The 3 in front were all pretty young and moved off quick but there was an older bull at the back going a bit slower so as he got in the thick stuff i used the cover to sprint in to 40m and hit him on the move from there. Single lung hit - and the arrowhead came out the other side. He raced around in a big circle and came back past me at about 25m. I shot the 2nd arrow high as he was running hard and I rushed the shot (still the right thing to do tho i reckon, just got to follow up fast - you cant wait on that followup as he wont hang around long). It hit him in the spine and he dropped on the spot much to my amazement - nothing like arrows that penetrate well!
so here he is. Not a great bull but it sure was a good day out with a mate. Plus I have plenty of ammo now to hang **** on him at the club!!
