View Full Version : BROADHEAD ARROW FLIGHT(changed subject)
Gaday fella's....spent 4 hrs today playing around with my setup trying to get my broadheads to shoot well....anyway i finnished up with 4" feathers on goldtip hunters and wood'y supremes to finally get a decent group..Do you guys think the Supremes have a wide enough cut to take most game
in Oz but mainly pigs and deer???
I had no success with either the hunter or the supreme matched up to goldtip terminaters and could not get groups on the hunters with hunters.
My next idea is to order some whitetails and see how they go..Any ideas??
Regards...Sparra
Gaday Coach...how was the hunt???
Im shooting a proline corsair(darton)at about 64#,the arrows are 55/75 and are 29.5" long from knock groove to insert tip.Groups at 20 and 40 are pretty good but 30 goes out the door.....
Regards...Sparra[/i]
thanks coach...That would explain why the lighter the head the better the group....Iv'e been going to try some whitetails so now is as good a time as any....
Regards...Sparra
The Hunters i was using are 125 grns and the Supremes are 115 grns and im getting the better group with the lighter ones...anyway...I'll get there..

I don't know what sort of speed your getting but you might want to look at going to 5" vanes with a far bit of helical to them to help stabilise your arrow the 5" will put more weight at the rear and the a good helical will give the same drag as feather. when you say didn't group well what sort of group were you getting horizontal or vertical groups or just all over the place. we need all the info of your set up to help. piont weight, release info and rest set too. solo cam or what
I've found that GT's work better with a bit of point weight ie. more FOC
Tac
Gaday Tack...My bow is single cam and the groups are all over the shop...I have a dropaway rest and no clearance probs and release aid so my thoughts are form or arrow setup...they do fly better with 4" feathers than when i had 4" duravanes on them...

Sparra you got to remember the that the feather/vanes are there to create drag so to stop the ass end of the arrow over taking the front also the FOC enables the arrow to fly where its pointed
BUT when you add little wings to the front of the shaft you've got the front trying to steer and so the two ends fight so you have to give the tail more steering ability then the front this becomes much harder at higher speeds thats why people with fast bows hopt for small b/heads or mechanicals
try and get you group to string vertical first (play with you centre shot) then your nock point.
did your dura vanes have any helical to them?
play with your 30 and 40 yard groups as that will show up more error
hope this is some help

Ok fella's...I just put 3 extra feathers on the worst of the arrows...1" forward of the 3 exsisting ones and they come back up between them...total 6 feathers. With both the hunters and the supremes the arrow flight is dead straight although a little fine tuneing needs to be done...So im hoping if i go 5" feathers the problem is solved...or i may have to double up on my fletches...Looks good but will be expensive...
Thanks for you help...
Regards....Sparra
No worries Coach...Im gonna get some whitetails off Kim and also some 5" feathers but this was just an experiment to see how they went..Tomorrow i'll try them out of my son's Bowtech...Its only 50-60 so that should make a difference...I'll keep you informed...

Oh yeah and the turkey took ages to get out of my rest!!!!!

Just as I siad coach elimenate the left right string first by fixing the centre shot then play with the nock point
Sparra you still haven't told us if you are putting any helical on them feathers
? why feathers shore they generate more drag then vanes but are noiser and a pain when wet
nice one with the whole turkey LOL . Have you tryed four feathers. a mate uses four fletched with lite helical and gets great arrow flight.
sparra do a search on arrow flight heaps of info out there.
Tac
Gaday Tack...Iv'e tried with both straight offset and helical and basically both the same....I got feathers to make some trad arrows and they looked good so i put some on my carbons...

Sparra, I am using the 65/80 whitetails with 4" vanes and Outback hunters. These are shot out of my Darton Vapor at 60lb's no dramas.
Took me a while to tune but shoots well now. Just gotta get close to some deer now!
Gaday Fella's...I took Coach's advice today and cut 2" of 4 arrows...at 20m and 30m with 115 supremes i was grouping at about 60mm and almost the same with hunters. So its definatley a step up to 65/85 whitetails because i like my arrows just a little longer...

I was not going to get into this but I feel I need to have a bit of a say.
First thing to remember is that if the b/head you put on is the same weight as your field tips then the tune of the setup is not changed. All the b/head does is amplify the bad arrow flight you already have.I would not go to a stiffer arrow to try to fix the prob.Until rec. I have shot a lot of GTs and have shot 55-75s out of a bow almost 75 pounds with ouback b/heads and they flew great.I have also shot 40-65 w/tails out of my 70 pound Switchback and they flew OK.The great thing about a compound is that you can adjust IT so you dont have to stuff around with diff arrows to find one that shoots. Before you do anything take the vanes off an arrow you want to use and shoot it bare with a field tip at about 3 mtrs into a target and see what it is doing. Then make adjustments on these findings.
Do this and please let me know what is going on.
