View Full Version : Insert thread
Stuffed up and have some glue in the thread of the inserts.
Could some one advise what thread it is so I can buy a tap to clean them out.
Thanks
Wellsy
This thread is 8x32 UNC (Unified National Course)
See ya Pete.
Pete, are you sure about this size, the guys down the local hardware/ metal merchants reckon it's 5/32" x 32 BSW
Thanks
Wellsy
Yep Positive!
The thread you mentioned is Imperial and is very close, but the thread is UNC is American and Whit is Imperial.
HereÃ*s a little lesson the boys down the hardware shop wouldnÃ*t know, the thread angle on the UNC thread is 60 Degrees and the Whit one is 55 degrees, not much difference and on an insert thread you would never know notice.
And I was a fitter and Machinist for 15 years trust me I know.
See Ya Pete.
I have a tap that fits inserts, tonight I will look for it, but from memory, they are not the usual tap sizes. The first digit refers to screw gauge and the next two digits are threads per inch.
I will get back to you when I can tell you exactly what it is, as I dont trust my memory enough to be certain :D
I'm assuming we are talking arrow inserts, if so, I gotta disagree Pete,
Whit (BSW) & UNC are the same except for 1/2", therefore 5/32" in BSW or UNC will do as the size you need is 5/32" :D
How do I know?, because it's my line of work, my inlaws own an engineering shop, & I have all the taps necessary for archery equip. including the one for the inserts 5/32" BSW :)
The 2 sizes in 1/2 your talking about refer the number of threads per in the 1/2 whit(BSW) has 12 and Ω UNC has 13 and in your travels look up a machinist book the angles are different and the UNC is the American version. I put money down that the 8 gauge by 32 threads per inch and it American but 5/32 whit will work.
Like I said I worked a CSRIO for 15 years doing R&D (Research and Development) and IÃ*ll put money on it!
The American thread series, with their symbols:
NC American National Coarse Thread
NF American National Fine Thread
NEF American National Extra Fine Thread
8N American National 8 Pitch
12N American National 12 Pitch
16N American National 16 Pitch
NS Special Threads of American National Form
SB Manufacturers Stove Bolt Standard Thread
UNC Unified Coarse Thread
UNF Unified Fine Thread
UN Unified diameter-pitch combination
UNS Unified threads of special diameters, pitches, and length of engagement
UNM Unified Miniature
See ya Pete.
Yeah Pete I know all about the 12 & 13 teeth per inch & the abbreviations for the different threads, but back to Wellsys' question:
Just checked & yep Pete you're right, 8x32 UNC  but as we say 5/32" does the job :D

Wellsy..
If you have any spare tips with the correct thread..what i normally do is cut with either a hacksaw blade or cut off wheel with the grinder, and i cut along the thread from top to bottom on one side...
Basically its a tap anyway...We mostly use this method with structual bolts at work, but i have used it at home on smaller threads as well.
