View Full Version : Silencers
What silencers are you using and how do you rate them.
I just went back to cat whiskers(not real whiskers) after the old and new string leeches kept breaking. Tells us if your home made jobbys keep coach.

I went down to the fishing shop and bought a pack of sililegs that they sell for making legs on fishing flies and for the skirts on bass bugs. They are just the same as the cat wisker silencers but for the same price you get like 4 bows worth and they come in all colors.
i use the cat wiskers to but when i put mine on i fold them in half than wrap them around the string then i tie them on....matt
I am using the sims string leeches, and limb savers and my bow already has harmonic dampeners built into it, and it is a really quiet bow :)

I roll mine around the string like you were rolling a durrie and then put a small cable tie on real tight in the middle. When you rub the rubber strips it breakes up into the whiskers.

Jindy, I do the exact same procedure but to sepparate them you pull them tight and slowly cut a small amount off them and they all individually split apart, its kinda fun

well , i use the leeches and limbsavers , and the bow is nice and quiet , when it has a cable that isnt broken LOL
i have shot my bow ALOT since i have got it and the string leeches havnt broken , dunno why :o you guys are having problems
cheapest and best is to go buy pack of rubber bands and tie a few on. The old timers at my old club have only ever used them. i have cat whiskers on my bow as it came with them but when ireplace the string i will go the rubber bands. the showy gimmicks get in the punters but are no better than rubber bands, pieces of occy strap, cut up limb saver, lures, they are as good as the dear crap on the market but people are willing to fork over cash because they think they must be better cause they cost more but in most cases they are not.
Cats whiskers for me.

Rubber bands hey......
How do you tie 'em on.
Do you cut them in half.
(Living 250 k's from the nearest archery shop can be a pain sometimes)
Mark
Buy the soft brown rubber bands, use about 20 per silencer.
Buy some 75mm black cable ties.
Lay the rubber bands on the cable tie, and put the tie around your string/cable.
As you pull the tie tighter, make sure the bands are evenly spaced around the string/cable.
When tight, trim the tie, snip the bands, viola!.... you have a silencer.

I use cats whiskers and have been known to tie them on with dental floss
Its cheaper than buying serving material :D
Cat whiskers with serving tie on seems to be the go for me.
Over about 2 months went through 3 sets of string leeches.

I was using the same as Woody, but I find the new Ultratec doesn't need them.
It is very quiet as it is.

'04 Ultratec bought new in January '05.
Came with the new Alphashox's as standard, same as the '05.
I was going to try beaver balls but i felt sorry for the beaver, so now i use puffs, they look cool. I hear all silencers slow your string speed Shame really as my recurve is only 40lb and I need all the speed I can get. On my Matthews Switch back i dont use any. The Switch back is so quiet with its harmonic dampners that you dont really need them.

I use cat whiskers, have for years and no dramas.
The Oneida I got from the states has a funny looking 4 pronged silencer on the string, they work well but haven't seen any down here for sale.
Woody..thats a GREAT idea..just to clarify for us simple folk..what size (length when not stretched) rubber bands do you find work the best :D

Yeh, same as most of you I've got limbsavers and 'super stealth string leeches' on my Hoyt. Someone mentioned'built in harmonic dampers' on there bow, must have been on one of those poorly designed Mathews or some such if it needed that. Try a Hoyt tech riser and you won't need a bunch of holes filled with rubber bungs to make the thing shootable! Just stirring  Oh, by the way my leeches broke off within a few hundred shots too.
I use cat wiskers, have done for years and they have never let me down.

Hey Brian what are those Maggot looking things on the tec bow limbs then?????????.
Cheers KIM
Guys
I have been using Bow Jacks for a couple of years they work very well and have been very durable , two sizes, larger for the string and neat little fellas for the cables.
On my longbow and Recurve I use wooley wispers with good results

I also use leeches, have found them to be ok. They do tend to be replaced fairly regularly, thats the only drawback. Have found whiskers a little noisy IMO.
