I notice with a lot of photos these days that guys are using smaller vanes. I am unsure if this is purely for target archery or whether with bows being so stable and fast that smaller vanes will now keep a broadhead straight.

Any thoughts, experiences???

dave.
there are many experienced archers here that know answers to your question. i think they are just lazy buggers!

there is an article in 'bow and arrow' magazine (USA) june/july issue about ' modern fletching' that may help.

the link above is to the aussie archery site technical forum. post your question there you may get some help. i wouldnt mind hearing some opinions on this myself.

there is a vane called the 'bohning blazer' that is very short,(one and a half to two inches long) however it makes up for this by being tall. and they shoot them with broadheads!

hope this helps. :D

Yep,
Go the Blazers. Only 5gr.apiece as opposed to 15 each for the longer ones.
Also work better thru a W.B. But yeah they are taller.

a friend of mine tried the blazers on mechanical heads and thought they were great but for fixed blade heads he found 4 or 5 inch vanes were a lot more accurate.

it has a lot to do with how your bow is set up. what poundage? what rest? how much clearance you have? how fast? size and weight of arrows? etc.
I use Gold tip 3355 sharfts with 1 1/2" feathers for target, (50lb), 85 g tips, and they work a treat. Not lost a weekend meet in 30 weeks straight. for hunting I use Gold tip 5575 sharfts, 125 g broadheads and 3" feathers,(60lb), and these work well. This is not an ad for Gold tips , it's just what I can afford. If I could afford better I would go to easton x10s. hope this helps. if you want more contact me by email on terryprowse@bigpond.com.au :D
