I'm new to the bow scene, so the brand and model names of the equipment are still confusing me. Any advice on what to look for. I'm after a bow that's capable of both competition and hunting, price range, up to $600 complete.

thanks

Korean 50 pound recurve about $220. A dozen wooden shafts about $30. Feathers glue and broadheads etc another $50. A backquiver is $70. Add a glove and your hunting. :D

You could use the rest of your cash to buy more shafts and heads etc or some camo or a knife or a camelbak etc.

Or you could waste it on building target points.

Good luck with starting bowhunting. :D

wasn't thinking Traditional

Let's face it.. burner probably WAS talking about getting a compound bow. They are great bits of gear.

I think that one of the trad gear's strongest selling points is that it is a lot cheaper to get into. It can be VERY cheap.

By the time you trick out even those compound bows above you could be looking at $800+. For that sort of money you can get a hand made bow from one of Australia's master bowyers.

I'll stop going on.. hahhahaa..

Burner Archery Mart have a complete Martine Jaguar package for a whisker over $600 which includes the bow, 4 fibre optic pin sight, 8 arrow bow quiver and 8 gold tip carbon arrows. You can choose what # you want the bow. and it comes in camo. The only down fall is the crappy budget arrow rest but for $30-$60 you can get a great rest.

being a 32.5 ax-ax bow you'd be needing a release aid aswell. more $.

thanks guys (and girls ?), the jaguar seems to be a popular bow. I should have been more specific re compound or recurve, but then again this is another thing I'm unsure about. I haven't shot alot of different bows as yet, but the compounds seem quite popular. again, thanks for the advice,

ahhh... aren't forums good to fish for info.

Reece matey.. here is a thread from Ozbow.net with some pics of my mate Hubris's Samick takedown recurve.

http://www.ozbow.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1503

I have seen him kill plenty of animals with this bow. It cost him a little more than 200 bucks from the Archery shop in Canberra. We are total SCUNGERS and do NOT like spending cash on our hunting. :D :D :D

Makes those compounds look pretty dear.

I have the exact same bow that Hubris had and It's doing me just fine.
They are about the $230-$250 mark depending on where you get them.

Burner, if you can, get yourself down to a club and ask around, most times the people there are more than willing to let you have a look, feel or even a shot of the different bows around, then you can make your mind up what you like...Good hunting..Cheers.Scott

yes hoyt1 that may be true, but my mate just bought a brand new reflex gamegetter for $500 (of course sight, rest etc put it up more) and it is a fantastic shooting bow. even without silencers/stabiliser it is dead quiet at 60#. it really puts my $1000 buckmaster hypertec i had to absolute shame. :(

im not that familiar with the new bows of today cause i now shoot a crossbow and have not had much to do with the compounds recently.
but the reflex model he got had the cam and a half system, shoots really well, and is super quiet. for a first bow at $500 new you couldn't ask for anything better. :D

hate to burst your bubble but the reflex's are a Hoyt do ya home work they both use the same risers with a little modification to the cosmetic looks and the same limbs and cam/half system. Just like the older mazda 323 is a ford lazer jsut rebadged.

I recon you should get a martin jaguar but if you are going to shoot fingers it may be a bit short as I was told so I got a martin phantom 2.
Archery mart says that martin is great value, a quality product, with the best warranty backup. And I agree with them.
I«ÉŸve had my martin for almost two years and haven«ÉŸt had a problem with it.

Burner,
I bought a Martin Jaguar package about a month ago from Archery mart in Adelaide. $609. It has a 4 pin fibre optic sight, bow quiver ,8 Gold Tip arrows*(complete) string silencers and a crappy arrow rest.
I also bought some more arrows and a bow case.
Its a good starter package I think.
I reckon my accuracy would be just as bad with a much dearer bow! But I like it,and it's affordable.
