As I have stated elsewhere I received my new Outback yesterday and have spent the last day and 1/2 playing with it. The Matrix is sighted in to 45 metres and I have had field points grouping well at all sighted distances (15, 25, 35 & 45 as it only has 4 pins)...better than I had hoped at this stage. :D

So I thought...lets try some broadheads....then the wheels fell off :(

I will however accept that the bow will need tuning but fair go, I have never seen so many "shoot like field points" broadheads plane so severely.

Here is what I found:

Bear Razorheads and Judo points are as accurate as the field points at all distances In fact this was the amazing thing, they would group inside 6" at 45 metres. :D

Steelforce Sabretooth, Razorcaps, Outback Hunter all were far from impressive. Time was not spent heating inserts and aligning all heads but with the accuracy of the Bears I did not think it that important.

Here is what I didnt find:

One Steelforce that missed the target completely at 35 metres and is currently buried under the grass in the paddock. :(

All broadheads were tried at both 100 & 125gn, some being marginally better than others at different weights. Bow is currently 28" with loop @ 60 lb. Arrows were Easton Epic carbonaeros, 400 @ 28" and 340 @29"

Any thoughts, comments....

Cheers, Dave.

What size fletches, stright or helical, when you shoot a field point and then a broadhead of the same weight ,where do they hit?

Wareagle,

Fletchings are helical, The Bear Razorheads would fly identical to the field points and group as tightly.

The rest would be so inconsistant, none would hit in the same spot on the target, they just flew all over the shop.

I had an Outback, I don't remember it being so touchy, sorry Dave but I think its either arrow construction or bow tuning,I find centershot is critical with broadheads, try paper tuning for nock height, and a walk back test for centershot. I'd also check for contact.

Dave dont do any adjustments to the bow itself yet as it has shot outbachs great before so get an arrow and take the vanes off and with a field tip only shoot into a but at about 2 to 3 metres and adjust the rest until you get a perfectly straight arrow flight.I would definatley use the stiffer arrows you have as that bow has a very grunty cam.If you still have any dramas give me a call but remember the adjustments you need to make may only be 1/2 a mill dont go moving the rest to much at one time.

Dave one thing I forget in my post but may have mentioned on the phone is that you need to be a bit more carful on your GRIP.
On a Mathews you cant hold the grip tight like you may have done on your old bow these bows dont jump in your hand so you can hold your bow hand in a "U" shape as you look down on your hand and let the top of the grip just sit on your thumb and finger.I hope that makes sence to you. Most of the guys who I know that have had trouble with these bows almost alway hold the bow to tight.Have you got the arrow lined up with the rest mounting hole cause if so then that rest should be behind the riser which will lower your bracehight a bit which makes it a bit more fussy about bow tourqe. Its not all bad thought as when it is set up right it will be the perfect hunting package.

Thank you Kim :D :D :D

I have now got all broadheads hitting where I aim out to 35 metres, even that whistler we spoke about.

Cheers Mate I had no doubt that you would get it sorted now wait and see how your shooting improves.I bet in a week or two you will shoot better than you have ever shot before......

Hmm, odd how it groups with field points and not broadheads, when its a hand torque problem :? but thats bows for you :D

Wasn't hand torque, I shoot with an open hand. My centre shot was way wrong, found this out with Kim's help.

It's great to se you tested the setup before the hunt.
To many think that "Shoots like Field points" will work with poorly tuned bows.
This reasoning is a major factor on the wound rates. Every "PRO SHOP" needs to learn about broadhead tuning and inform their customers that the bow needs to be tuned for Broadheads and Field points.
When 1 style of broadhead shoots well that does not mean all styles will shoot well without more fine tuning.
When a bow is tuned properly I have found that any broadhead style will fly just like a field point. Also the field point group size will improve after tuning for broadheads.
