G'day all,
Thought I'd share a story of a fox or foxes around these parts. These stories are events witnessed by family and neighbours but I am yet to meet the culprit fox. (I did try tonight with a monocular night vision piece I have - no luck).
Four years ago - 9am in the morning, Sue (my partner's mum) was making breakfast when she looked out the back window and saw the family cat kneeling down in the grass about 20-30 meters away. Looking closer she noticed the cat was actually bailed up and being circled by a huge fox. Sue ran outside and the fox didn't move away from the cat (who is fine by the way, stayed still and wasn't touched) until she got within 1-2 meters - yelling as she went. The fox was quoted to be the size of the family dog - Rose- a 45kg rottweiler. Not as fat but of the same general length/height approx.
Three years ago - After dark, both my partners' parents heard a commotion coming from the chook shed. Peter (father) grabbed the torch and Sue and him headed outside. They split up going round the shed and upon getting to the chookshed Peter didn't see anything up. While at the back of the shed/chookpen a couple of foxes had shown up and started to circle Sue. She started to scream and Pete came running and the foxes high tailed it out of there. I'm not sure of the sizes/number just more than one.
Two months ago - 12'clock midday, the neighbour came home and wandered out the back to check on her chooks who free range during the day. She found them all dead scattered around the yard. A fox (supposedly as large as the first one which bailed up the cat - so Big) came out of the scrub at the back and ran up to one of the carcass's and took it away. It proceeded to do this - one by one - with each carcass. The lady (neighbour) got a broom and tried to scare him away and she said he stood his ground until she got within a meter with the broom within striking range. The fox picked up a carcass and went back into the bush. It got all the dead chooks - approx 12.
I'm not sure if the 1st/3rd story fox is the same one but people around here think it might be. As you can see he/she seems pretty un-afraid when it comes to humans. :?
As I said before I'm only relating these stories to you but the people who told me are pretty reliable sources. I doubt there is much if any exaggeration.
Cheers -
Tristan
