It was a bit later start than I was hoping but my mate Daniel and I were in the bush and walking into one of our favourite hunting spots. With the hope of catching some deer still out and about we walked towards the clearing. About 3km in and we were at the clearing and no deer. We then decided to keep walking along the ridge and look for some goats.

Just over the other side of the ridge we saw them, a big mob down in the gully so we slid down the hill towards the mob. We noticed they were feeding towards us so we sat tight behind some bushes. That’s when we saw him a big white Billy walking along in the creek; he was by far bigger than anything we had shot before. We were trapped in though with goats coming up to the bushes we were hiding behind. I told Daniel just to shoot one of the smaller Billies that was close but the goats saw the movement and took off as he was trying to draw. Luckily the goats took no notice of the 7 or so running up the ridge and out of danger and kept feeding with the big one in the middle.

We backtracked and came down a little further on in the bushes and waited for them to feed up to us. To our horror they changed sides of the creek and fed along there about 50m away. I told Daniel I was going to take a shot and he spied a Billy looking at us about 40m away and he opted to shoot at that one. Slowly I drew back my 60# Pierson and rested my 50m on his shoulder I then touched off the release to see my arrow smack him in the point of the shoulder. Damn those mechanical blades it only penetrated about 4 inches. I heard the sound of a good hit from Daniel and looked down to see a dead goat.

My Billy then ran up past us and I gave him another arrow on the run but it was a bit far back. He ran into a really scrubby gully and I searched for ages but couldn’t find him anywhere. I know he would have had to die with the shots but it was just way too thick to find anything. Talk about finding a needle in a haystack.

With that under my belt I thought it was going to be one of those days but low and behold we spied another mob of Billies feeding on top of a scrubby hill in front of us. So off we went up the hill and sat back for a while glassing the mob. Our Billies had seemed to turn into nannies so we put a half stalk on them to come out at 30m and see there were two good Billies in the mob. I spied old wonky horn standing with a good 30” black goat.
(We had him walk to within 5m of us on a previous hunt but the branches in the way had made a shot impossible and his unusual set of horns was a prize of its own.)

With the shakes starting to set in I struggled to hold the pin on his shoulder but I managed to keep it there long enough to punch an arrow into his chest. The penetration wasn’t there again and as he ran off down the hill I had wished I was using 2 bladers. There was still the rest of the mob there and brownie nailed a young nanny from about 30m.

While getting pictures of brownie’s nanny we watched my goat standing under a tree at the bottom of the creek and waited for him to expire. It was about half an hour later when we decided to put another arrow into him.

I stalked down the hill and above him only to see he wasn’t there. I looked up and brownie was pointing south so I jogged over the rise to see him walking along about 40m way I gave a bleat and he propped and I let rip with another arrow but dam over the top and never to be seen again. He bolted for a while then steadied up to a jog again I knew he wasn’t feeling so great so I gave chase and managed to put another arrow in him before he disappeared over the ridge.

I caught up with Daniel and we walked over the ridge together and had a bit of a search in the scrub. It was a welcome relief when I heard there he is from Daniel. He had piled up in a scrape under a mallee tree. We put an arrow between his horns and it was a bit bigger and later measured out at 32” and around 100dp. I was stoked and he was my first goat over 100dp.
