Well it was that time of year again and the fallow had just about finished rutting. My cousin had invited me down to his southeast block again to help him with some fencing. Which I didn’t refuse knowing the numbers of deer down there.
It was a very uneventful 5-hour drive but finally we were there. We had only just finished unpacking our gear into the house and he said you could take that new bow of yours for a walk if you want. So I eagerly raced off into my room and whacked on the camo clothing and came back out with my gear ready to go. My cousin had a good old laugh at my clothing and then wished me luck.
I walked straight out to the back fence, which bordered the national park and started to head south along the fence line. I had gone about 2km and it was not looking good usually I had seen 10 or more by now. When I saw some movement in the national park up on top of the hill in front of me.
I had a look through the bino’s and it was two fallow spikers. They were heading for a hole in the fence that went into my cousin’s land. I stalked through the scrub and waited behind a small bushy tree 10m away from the hole.
Almost as soon as I settled in the first deer poked its head through the hole and walked through. I drew back and noticed I didn’t have any gaps to shoot through. I then found a small opening about 6 inches long and about 4 inches wide and managed to line the shoulder of the first deer’s chest up through there. I then touched off the shot and heard a twang and stood up to see the deer had already gone and my arrow was sticking out a tree on the fence line.
I then heard a crash behind me but took more notice of my arrow and saw it was covered in blood. I walked over and pulled my arrow out the tree and was starting to get pretty excited. I then followed a good blood trail into the thick scrub behind where I was sitting and not 30m from where I had shot him my spiker lay. The first thing I did was grabbing my phone and sent a txt message to my mate and told him. Then I looked up to see the other spiker looking at me from about 40m I didn’t even bother trying to shoot him as I knew as soon as I moved he would be gone and he was.
Well what a rush as I had just got my first kill with my new bow and my first fallow deer. My bow was a bowtech Tomcat and boy was I happy with it. It had broken both shoulders and stuck in a tree behind the deer. And it was just the first afternoon boy was I excited of the days to come. But that’s another story.
