View Full Version : Easton Epic Warning.
I purchased some new Epics the other day to add to the older few I have. They have changed the graphic on the shaft now but I wonder if they have changed their construction as well. I was shooting at the target the other night when a new arrow went completely through and hit the fence behind (not the first time this has happened, target getting a bit old and the Outback sends em down harder than the Hoyt) I went to retrieve it and it was in about 5 pieces on the ground. Since then I have had 2 others break under very suspect circumstances, no tearing they just completely snapped in half.
I have had older ones take a hell of a beating that make me check them several times, expecting the worst but they just soldier on. This on the other hand is a little scary cos now I dont know if one is going to Blow up coming out of the bow.
I have stopped using them..
Anybody else have this happen to them?
Dave.
i love carbons but havent used the epics so far.
this kind of thing is the only thing i dont like about them, it is a worry.

G'day Dave.
I have been using 300&340 Epics for a couple of years now and have not had any problems so far.
I would be taking them back to the dealer and speaking to him about it
I'm sure he would like to know of any possible dangers.
Thanks for the warning.
Happy Bowhunting
Gavin.

SOLD SOLD
"went completely through and hit the fence behind
Arrows are not made for this. LOL we all do it though.
I have shot Epics for years {new and old }and they are as good as any. All arrows can and will break .This is most likely to happen when they get a side hit. When they don't hit straight on and the impact is strong you can crack and break any type arrow. This is why we need to check them after glancing shots etc.
Don't blame the shaft .
I have also not had any problems with them. Sevwral weeks ago i shot at a bunnie and missed and the arrow was a clean kill on a great piece of basalt rock the Woodys superme and epic 340 were both in excellent condition.
We seem to be agreeing a lot lately Coach. :D
I have used Eastons for year and have seen nothing like this. These things seem...."fragile"...., I have pushed the field point into a shaft before on hard hits, but have never had one blow up into 5 pieces. This is not the Easton I am used to.
Dave.
What ,,, am I a baddy or something ?
Not that I am aware of :? :? Are you hiding something
Hi mate did you get my PM yesterday I dont have any bright blazers in stock but will be ordering tomorrow will I wait with the other gear until I get them in or send them on later.
Cheers KIM
A note on the inserts being pushed in the shaft on hard hits:
This is caused by a glue failure. The bond breaks and this allows the inssert to be pushed inside.
Typicaly this happens with lock tite, Instant glues ,hot melts, Ferrel tite etc.
When the inserts and inside of the shaft are degreased, with solvent, and 24 hour epoxy is used this can not happen. A light scuff with sandpaper to scratch the insert surface for a better bond also is a good thing.
It's nice to see Easton changed the shaft size. !!!!!!!!!
Now tuning will be off if we have the old and 06 shafts. Brass inserts will not fit, spare nocks will not fit. Looks like a switch back to Excells now.

Truly....what other little words of wisdom can you share :)
Not taking the piss Pete, I cant believe I missed something so bloody obvious :? I use hotmelt so I can re-align broadheads and this has been happening for years. I have quite a collection of short arrows :(
Dave.
LOL
Glad it solves a mystery for you dave.
I see this a lot, guys are leaving inserts in the targets and mushrooming shafts.
Often the impact fractures the bond and does not push the insert inside the shaft. The next hard target the arrow goes into keeps the insert.!! Then we git that spot later and ruin a shaft.
I never worry about broadhead alignment. If they need to be a certain way there is a tuning issue not yet resolved. Afetr all how do you lign up a 2 blade with 3 fletch?? or a 4 blade with 3 fletch , or a 3 blade with 4 fletch? get the idea?
For those that think it matters or who need them a certain way for what ever reason Martin sells some plastic washers , {point locks} real cheap. Use these ,they compress as you tighten the BH and you can get the alignment you want. they weigh about 2 or 3 grains so weight is not an issue. They also keep points and Broadheads from coming loose.

This is the only problem ive hade with them from 40 metershttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b351/vipertec/archery05011.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b351/vipertec/archery05012.jpg
Yeah Vipertec, I have one of them here at the moment. Don't it put a smile on your face. :D
All the Eastons here that have the same logo as those are fine, I dont have a problem with them at all. It is just these new ones that seem brittle. I have Excels here that I have had for 4 years and they are still as good as the day I bought them.
