Just a quick story, after a rather large new year eve night in the rather interesting pub in Coen named the "Sexchange",yes thats right. ,we awoke the next day around 10am,a little worse for wear. After a good feed of bacon/eggs and a cold can of coke, not a bad hangover cure , we then sat around and watched a couple hunting vids .Around 330pm we decided we better head home and leave Mick the local park ranger in peace.

Luke who has recently moved to Weipa came down for a couple days hunting and invited me along to Coen to catch up with his mate Mick.It was a good hour and half drive back to the property. On arriving to the back gate Luke spots a large pig up the track.I grab my bow out the back, but by the time we head up there he is long gone.

We jump back into the patrol, and I decide to keep the bow in front in case we spot anything else on the drive home through the property. Luck was in,it may be a great sign for the year to come.I am confronted with a choice,a small dingo pup and a boar feeding out in the paddock near some young cattle.

Idecide to go for the pup as he curiously walks up to me to have a sticky. I draw back as he slowly walks past at 20 metres and send the arrow harmlessly down the track. He runs off and another of his mates appear and joins him in the escape.

All this time the small boar is casually feeding not 60 metres away, oblivious to everything. Luke grabs my video camera and starts filming from the car as I quickly head to a large gum tree for cover.I then go to ground and crawl for 30 metres using small depressions and grass as cover.

Closing the gap to 25 metres as a couple of young steers come in and start pushing the boar away from the green grass. This allows me to quickly head to a fence post for cover and brings me into just under 25metres away. I draw back as the young steer eyeballs me and decides to move away allowing me a clear shot at the quartering away boar.

I release and hit a bit back further then I wanted. The boar screams chasing itself in circles as it trys to attack the arrow buried deep into its side. I have nocked another arrow but its not needed as the boar falls to the ground and goes through its last motions.

Climbing through the barbed fence , arrow at the ready i notice luke heading over. The boar is finished and we quickly take some more footage and pics as the daylight will be fading off soon. The shot severed the femoral artery as it buried up inside the young mud covered boar.

After watching the video footage over and over i could now see that the boar had stepped forward as i shot ,making me feel better about my shot.
It was an unexpected start for the year, but hey im not complaining.

happy new year.pat mcnamara
