I only just began bowhunting again after quite a few years off.I dont know why i stopped. I guess it was school and landing myself my first full time job after finishing year 12. with plenty of things on my plate to consume my time i simply forgot about it, and with the bow in the cubbord it was a case of ' out of site out of mind ' Until reasntly.
My Brother got some time off work as Did i and we began reminising of our bowhunting days..we never really got any big game but we enjoyed the outdoors and the time we spend surrounded by mother natures glory.Bowhunting was another thing, We realy only did it during early morning and mid to late afternoon when the heat wasnt so bad, and if it was raining we probably wouldnt get a chance to get out to our spots where we liked to hunt.being under 18 we never had the chance to just pop out the back for a shoot. But thats far in the past as now were well over the legal age to be driving
and have cars of our own, It was now a matter of when and where.
So weeks ago we began hunting , just stomping through really trying to remain as quiet as posible It was hard because the ground under foot was littered with twigs and dry grass making it hard to stalk our prey, and if you wanted to make it as silent as posible it could littlery take you 30-40 mins just to pass tne corner and 50 meters down.
It had been a while since we had the chance to spend some time together so our skills were a little out of whack. Mostly just taking the odd shot at the stupid rabbit who didnt take off with the others when they had herd us comming. Anyways a few weeks later and a visit or two to the archery range to hone our
'Shooting' skills we were satasfied with our bows and our proformances and desided to go out hunting once more...
After work and only 1 klms away we were in our New Stoney creek cammos. From head to toe we were suited in some of the best stuff money can buy. Bows-in-hand we were strolling though our little hunting ground not much but it houses quite a few rabbits and the occasional fox, but due to been so local, sometimes you get the odd person strolling past where a train track runs through the area. ( no worries its safe )
Having a few shots that day myself but leaving empty handed i was beginning to feel i should register for a crossbow licience and give that a try. Afterall
My paper-tear knocking point test was resulting in perfect release shots,I later found out it was just my finger placment and how i was releasing it.
All of a sudden i see my bro Drawing back his bow to a full 30 Inch Draw pausing only for a second to 'guess' where to point the arrow he Fired,at 70 pound it came screaming out of the bow and straight inline with the barrit. the arrow found its destination slightly right of his chest and into the Gut. A massive leap into the air and a death curdling screeach from the rabbit and he was off at lightning speeds,(Almost as fast as my bro ! weilding his machette) the rabbit somehow dislodged the arrow and headded straight into his safe burrow! Meanwhile our hearts were almost pounding out of our chests and my brother was where he shot him, collecting his bloddy arrow but it was too late. After all the excitment and a few laughts we were convinced all we had to do was a little more practice and we would soon bag Us some of thoes pesky Rabbits.
A fortnight latter and my brother had gone home, back to his job. with nothing to do after work i desided to go for a hunt and try my luck. Once there i quickly got out of my work gear and suited up. Only 5 mins later i was taking my first shot of the day, No practise shots for me only my new Release Aid, 2 bottles of Gadeorade a back pack full of uniforms and a pillow case with four carbons dangling out of it which I tied to my belt ( it worked a treat )
Releasing the shot and it was perfect... closer closer DAMN! shoot just over his body.. but dead inline. a few more meters up the track and i knocked back up. and seen this fella just sitting in the open. I was thinking to myself his too far jay you'll only loose your arrow. But beeing in the hunting mood i was In i took another shot. Again it was so close i even got some Fur off the bugga I popped it in my pocked for luck. Found my arrow and continued. 1 more shot that was a near miss It took me 10 or more mins to find my arrow , have a drink and remove my face net and hat got some fresh air and regaind my composure as it had been a day in the high 30s i was just taking it easy and enjoying the afternoons splender.
I followed around the track and came to a point in which i found an old arrow my bro shot weeks befor, i couldnt beleve my luck, i removed the arrow i had knocked and replaced it with my bros. saying to myself aloud 'Im gonna shoot a rabbit with this arrow ' ( i **** u not ) and continued again. taking my time through the noisy bush i came to a dirt patch and had a look up in some green grassy area, there was at leat 6 of them.. and they continued to feed. i creped to within 20 or so meters and drew back the bow , there was one tiny rabbit sitting on his hine legs sniffing the air and gazing his last gaze and I released. Thump... not a sound.. no movement my eyes grew wide I couldnt beleve it ! his down! I ran up to him and noticed i pinned him in his neck / sholder..
WHAT A SHOT! i cryed, removed the arrow and broke his neck to make sure he was dead. For the next 20 mins the grin on my face was almost hurting. The releaf of it all and it was just a wonderful feeling to have suceeded with primitive meansafter weeks of trying and practise. without a rifle, or without sites and all that jazz. It was such a pitty my bro couldnt have been there to share the experience with me, but now I'm Inspired and im sure there will be plenty more good times for the both of us to have, hopefully soon we can go bowhunting for some bigger game once i become a better archer!
Hope i didnt bore you guys with the novle, kinda slipped away in my head there for a while.heres a picture of
the 'kitten' for all to see. Dont mind my goofy grin, its been a long time since i bagged somthing with the bow!
